David Tepper.... Year 5 ownership, + and - of Tepper

This is now the close of year 5 for David Tepper and here are my personal POSITIVES and NEGATIVES of him

 

Positives:

INSANELY rich who has no problems writing a check

 

Negatives:

Not a hands off owner, gets involved in personnel when he really shouldn't

Bull in the China shop mentality- Rock Hill comes to mind

Doing too much too quickly- why buy a soccer team when your football team still stinks

Hasn't been "In the community"- JR lives in Quail Hollow and was a local staple and gave back to places like Wofford, UNCC. Tepper is just hear mostly during the season

I think the soccer team was actually a positive.  If he let football people make football decisions the soccer team would have no affect on the football team.  I still don't think it does. Seems like he's being more hands off with FC and they're being more well run. Whata ya know

I truly feel like we're in on every deal. I would much rather have that mentality from an owner/GM combo than those who never make a push. It's more fun to follow.

Rock Hill doesn't bother me - not my money

It really comes down to how this next HC search plays out. I am very worried that he is honed in on Payton like he was with Rhule, not that they are the same, but I hope there are serious discussions on who is the next HC and not just a rubber stamp on Payton after the 1st meeting.

Carolina being "in on every deal" has proven to not be something to boast about.  We are in on all the players we shouldn't be adding to the roster.

Fitt is still gigantic unknown IMO.  Can't really call him a good GM.  Incomplete is really the only grade he can get. 

Tepper hasn't proven he is willing to move on from mistakes quickly.   See Rhule getting a pointless 3rd year.  It was painfully clear it was time to move on from him and he willingly chose to waste everyone's time.

This is the only thing I disagree with.  How did Tepper not move on from Rhule quickly?  He only coached 38 games here.  That is absolutely a quick turnaround as most bad HCs still usually get a full 3-4 years unless they are causing problems for the FO or players (Chip Kelly, Urban Meyer).  Even the aggressive Rams held onto Jeff Fisher for 4 1/2 seasons.

I agree with you he should have gotten fired as soon as Year 2 ended but in the grand scheme of things I'd say Tepper moved on pretty fast.  And I'd still argue the main reason he didn't get fired last year is because so many teams fired their HC and we didn't want to compete with all the other teams for a HC.  I said last year that I actually felt like we might benefit by waiting another year because there would be far less openings.  Panthers aren't even in the conversation for Sean Payton last year, meanwhile this year some would argue we are the most desirable HC spot.

None of those trades were terrible if you consider the situations we were in at the time and what we gave up. We got Mayfield for peanuts at a backup QB value. We gave the Jaguars a below average tight end and ~4th round value pick for our #3 CB. Darnold was a risk and he played like he may have been worth the trade this year. Likely too little, too late for him though. 
 

You question the move to acquire Stafford? The QB who won a Super Bowl last year? lol

Also, we clearly weren’t going to give up all that Watson wanted for that trade.

yeah, the Sam Darnold deal and contact was terrible given the situation we were in.   A rebuilding team paid for the worst starting QB in the NFL and predictably got just that. 

and it's not just about dollars/cost.  It's about building and reps.  Adding horrific vets to take reps and start isn't how you build a team.   Take this past offseason, Corral got no reps hardly in camp.   Why? Because we had horrific vets QBs taking all the reps. 

yes, I question giving up the farm for Matt Stafford.   He was a rental for a team a QB away.  Which means Stafford made a lot of sense for the Rams.....and made literally zero sense for the rebuilding Carolina Panthers.   So we would have given up the farm for a QB washed after 1 year into his rental that we gave up the farm for it.   And we wouldn't have a title or anything to show for acquiring him.  Just lost draft picks that a rebuilding team needs.   The Ram and Panthers weren't comparable.    

We were supposed to rebuild.  Rhule/Fitt weren't doing that well.  At all.  Too often they were making moves of a win now franchise.   And Fitt shouldn't get a pass
