What if Stroud doesn’t declare for draft…

C.J. Stroud is projected to be a top-5 NFL Draft pick this spring. Will he become a pioneer of the NIL era instead?

Patience can be profitable.

It’s not unusual in baseball and hockey, where college players can be drafted by pro teams yet still play under NCAA rules. And college basketball has already seen multiple marginal NBA prospects return in part due to NIL money, including Kentucky’s Oscar Tshiebwe, the reigning national Player of the Year.

The same is becoming true in college football.

Michigan boosters, among others, have created a collective called the “One More Year Fund” that doesn’t hide its goal to tip the balance of the go-pro-or-stay-in-school debate for Wolverine players. Its motto channels the old Bo Schembechler promise: “Those who stay, will be paid.”

It directly describes itself as a “crowdfunding campaign designed to retain key Michigan football players, starting with Blake Corum, Cornelius Johnson, Trevor Keegan and Zak Zinter.”

Stroud already had some nice NIL deals. He drove a $200,000 Mercedes G Wagon this past year in an agreement with a local car dealer as well as another contract with Columbus-based clothing brand Express. And that’s just the traditional stuff.

There are no poor star quarterbacks any longer. They may not be as rich as their NFL counterparts, but the promise of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, in NIL money may slow down the talent flow from college to the pros. If nothing else, it gives every player from every background the luxury of choosing development that once was reserved for those from wealthy families.

Maybe C.J. Stroud is the pioneer here. If not, someone will be soon.

Top 5 draft pick contracts are $30 to $37m with 20-25m signing bonuses.

NIL isn’t touching that yet.

Not total years/value, but if a guy can get $5 million or so for a single season of less games, that has to be something to strongly consider, especially if you come from a poor family.

Yea, saw that story yesterday.  Not sure what his possible motivation might be to stay in school.  Not sure he can really improve his stock, but he sure could damage it or even get hurt.  I also saw another story about the QB competition at Ohio State say how tight it was.  Even in that story there seemed to be some question about Stroud leaving.

He may be wanting to stay and try and win a national championship, He has to be getting a ton of NIL money. He may see who has the top picks and does not like what he sees. Who knows. I remember a similar situation with Andrew Luck.

Honestly, depending on what Stroud wants with his football career, going back could be the right move.

If he declares this year, yea, he'll get that top 5 draft pick contract money, but end up on a crap team that could hurt his career prospects, like the Texans.

If he were to go back to school, make a couple million in NIL to do so, and then come out in what is a deeper QB class, he could end up in the 15-20 range of the draft.

Sure, he'll make much less money on that first contract, but he could end up on a team with a much better group of players around him and thus help him be more successful and then have a longer career and make way more money on that second contract.

The guy is guaranteed to go in the first. So it’s $5 mil to stay or 10-30 mil to get drafted.

I'm not saying he wouldn't make more over the life of the contract by staying in school. The only way he would get more than $5 mil a year based off this past first round pick contracts, is going top 5-6. So maybe he(and others) feel he could get close to the same money for one year by staying in school and playing less games. It is possible, though not likely, he and his agent have been told he wouldn't be a top 5 pick despite how QB needy some teams are.

If he stays in school, he'll still go top 5 next season. It makes no sense to think otherwise. It also makes no sense for him to want an extra 5 mil (NIL) now before getting his NFL money the following year, as when you're making big NFL money, 5 mil is nothing. So if he doesn't declare it's for only two reasons IMHO: he doesn't want to play for the Texans, or he actually likes college life and wants to do it for one more year.

Also pushes back his possible big contract resign if he actually becomes a franchise guy, another year. Not sure if he’s thinking that far ahead though.

And I don’t think he is a lock to go #1 (or #2) to texans. Maybe if he was a lock like trevor was coming out that would be more viable. But he’ll still go to a terrible team if he waits till next year.

Random: He had an interview on the pivot podcast last year with bijon robinson (texas rb). He sounded very religious and well spoken if you wanna give it a watch/listen.

His family is a very religious family. He has until 4 PM today to declare. Folks are saying most OSU players typically declare on the final day and it’s a school thing.
