I can't imagine they would fire Staley to hire a 1-2 year OC.

It wouldn't be. They would fire him if they had a backroom deal to know they could get Payton. Chargers OC Joe Lombardi came from Payton's staff in New Orleans. I'm sure they still talk (off the record.)

Typical groupthink. NFL execs are afraid to step outside the box because it’s a copycat league. Right now the “in” thing is <40 year old offensive coordinator. Wilks obviously doesn’t fit that mold so he’s not going to get interviews. Why is that so hard to understand? Doesn’t mean he isn’t the right guy for our job.

He is a defensive guy who has had nothing but asswater defenses. He was the worst DC during Riveras stint as HC and the defense got worse when Snow left. Step outside the bubble and ask yourself why other DCs (and even some defensive positional coaches) are getting interviews and Wilks isn't even getting Rooney Rule ones.

they fired  Marty Schottenheimer after going 14-2

And he had other great regular seasons too. A lot of ppl forget about him being canned. He always had great regular season teams but just couldn’t quite get it done in the post season.

Full context of Person's answer about Ben Johnson (quoted in the other thread)...

The buzz in league circles is that Tepper is enamored with Johnson, whose innovative schemes helped the Lions finish fifth in the NFL in scoring offense and total offense in his first season as offensive coordinator. Johnson’s a sharp guy — with degrees from UNC in math and computer science — so you’d have to think he’s going to nail his interview this week. The 36-year-old Johnson, who was the Lions’ tight ends coach in 2021, is an in-demand candidate. The Asheville, N.C., native has interviewed with the Texans and Colts, but Tepper proved three years ago with Matt Rhule he’s not going to be outbid.

I think Wilks has to be in the top 3 after taking over a bad situation and nearly guiding the Panthers to the playoffs. The Panthers were competitive in every game but one under Wilks, whose support from players can’t be ignored. The wild card could be a candidate whose team gets hot and makes a deep playoff run, someone like the Eagles’ Steichen or Buffalo offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey. But that would require Tepper to be patient, and he might not care to wait if he’s blown away by Johnson.

In fact, the search could be wrapped up this week if Johnson is the choice. The Panthers have requested permission to speak with Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who is expected to take the interview. Evero would become the second external minority candidate to interview, which would satisfy the Rooney Rule requirements.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
