Soft Zone

The one positive thing about Snow is that he stayed in man A LOT, probably too much.

Wilks is running the same defense as 2017 after McDermott left. It’s just a basic soft zone-blitz scheme. Which is very dependent on having a guy like Luke who can make checks and call gaps on the fly.

Washington did the same but would throw that “Big Nickel” poo in it and we played off the ball like 15 yards.

Yeah I love Wilks as a leader but this soft zone poo I cannot stand. Imagine if Sam had the option to throw 8 yard open passes every snap, he'd get it done too. Even Jaycee's INT last week, he basically broke the rules and went rogue to get that pick. The safeties got burnt on that play actually, if Horn didn't naturally have the instincts to make that play that would have been a 50-60 yard TD

When will we stop playing this crap. 3rd and long allll day was an easy completion.  Wilks still thinks Burns is Peppers.

man up at the line. Who cares if we get beat. We keep getting near underneath by backup QBs throwing it 15 while Burns gets stuffed on the outside.

I swear it was the same fk'ing play every single time. Henderson got burned over and over again on the same out route.

Our defensive game plan fit perfectly for what they did.  They got the ball out of Trubisky's hands quickly and we just kept doing the same thing.  Very disappointed since our HC is supposed to be a defensive minded coach.  What gets me is we did nothing to change our approach.

I think it was Taylor you're talking about... Henderson left the game early IIRC.

Regardless, the coverage scheme wasn't working and it was obvious. How the coaches couldn't see it is beyond me.

Even when they did play the occasional man, they didn't press at the line to disturb the routes. I didn't get to watch the game live but from Twitter it sounded like we made zero halftime adjustments and kept getting our ass kicked the same way from start to finish. It's not that hard to try something different when option A is obviously not working

Not sure what game you guys watched but I saw alot of zero blitzes on 3rd down which left either Chinn or Taylor on an island against a receiver and we couldnt win the matchup

Pickens was eating us up and we moved Horn over to him and virtually took him out of the game in the 2nd half and that left Taylor 1on1 with Dionte Johnson who abused him

This coaching staff is proving that they cannot adjust on the fly but want to be stubborn and stick to an original game plan, even if it's not working.

When you are a defensive HC, you are scared to death for the other team to score...an offensive HC...not nearly as worried about it...they know they can just score more.

This type of mindset is why I'm really nervous about Wilks as our next HC.  Ready for a change personally.

Yeah there was a key 3rd and 14 late in the 4th quarter where Taylor was left 1-on-1 with Johnson alone covering an entire half of the field lol.  That's not on Taylor, he was set up for failure against a very shifty solid route runner in Johnson...that was on the defensive playcalling.

They don't want to see the adjustments because they want to solidify the anti Wilks narrative. They ran man to man and were beat on a couple of throws. Then they went zone and our lack of talent showed up as players made some plays and others they didn't. All kinds of adjustments were made and people that don't know football are just being dismissive. This is a Rhule(college coach with only experience being 1 year as assistant OL coach) built roster and the fact they are coached up to at least be competitive is a feat in itself.

When we have a different DC. McDermott/Rivera always made zone pretty aggressive but Wilks and Washington always had some basic zones that were always soft and not aggressive when needed.

Nah, we have played the off zone stuff with them too, just think back to the slant game vs Chicago when they drove down the field on all slants.

Any game vs NO, this board was livid when Wilks became DC and ran more man press with blitzes and we were getting cooked because only Bradberry could cover at the time.
