Brock Purdy and why we don't need to draft a 1st round QB

QB is approached differently than other positions in the draft. You only play 1 QB on Sunday (unless Rhule), so you draft a QB to start, and don’t draft a QB high to back up.

So a 1st round QB is one you decided to commit to. You give them every chance. Sometimes a guy slips to the 2nd, and you can commit to them to.

Drafting a guy at that point and after to be a backup after seems like a waste of a pick, since you can draft players at other positions who can contribute more, since they can see the field.

So what am I trying to say?…

The perceived talent difference between a 1st round QB and a 5th round QB is greater than the actual talent difference. Dak is a great example. He had obvious tools, but a team didn’t want to commit to him as “the guy” so he slipped later than his physical talent warranted.

Of all the QB’s in college (and there are a poo load of starting QB’s) who are draft eligible, maybe 5-10 get drafted. All these guys have physical ability.

The difference is mentality, personality, the amount of commitment they get from their team, and the coaching/team situation they are in.

Think of the luck involved with most of these QB’s too.

Brocks situation. Unlucky for the two guys higher on the depth chart. Lucky for him.

Would he have this shot otherwise? They have invested a metric poo ton in Trey Lance. He will (and still will) get every chance to take that job because so much was invested, and so much front office reputation is therefore attached to him.

The interesting thought experiment is…how many Brock’s are there, and have been there over the years, that simply didn’t get the chance due to politics?

Tom Brady himself got a chance because of an injured starter. Marc Bulger (remember him?) got a chance because of injury too.

There’s more to QB success than an obvious talent difference. There is bias/politics/opinion/favoritism that is always involved. It’s only human.

Im not even saying don’t draft a guy in the 1st round, but only pointing out that thinking “dude sucks because he was a 5th/6th/7th/UDFA” or “you have to take a QB in round 1 or bust” thinking is far from being the case, and that it’s more complicated than that.

The two teams playing last night are great examples of what a mediocre QB can do on a team with a strong running game, good OL, and good defense.

Wilson had these things in Seattle--moves to Denver, "Let's ride!" referring to the rail out of town.

Geno Smith comes in and succeeds.  Comeback player of the year.

In SF, Garrapolo is a good QB.  Good OL, defense, Running game.  He gets hurt, Purty is a good to decent QB.

Yep, Purdy is throwing to a HoF TE and handing off to a HoF RB.

Don't get me wrong he's completely exceeding expectations, but the media is blowing up this story far too much.

I think as a fan one of the keys to understanding what you're saying here, which I agree with btw, is to understand that your team's coaching staff and front office staff DO NOT have the same priorities that you have as a fan.

Your priority is for the team to win. Period.

Their priorities are to keep their jobs, and to be perceived as capable and successful.

It is very easy to fall into the mental trap of thinking these things are the same. They are not. Having a late round or undrafted player, especially at QB, succeed over their handpicked first round talent is a case in point. Good for the team, increases winning, good for you as a fan, but NOT what a GM or HC necessarily want. Their rep, their success, may be tied to other players.

And this is exactly the sort of thing that leads teams not to be 100 percent objectively merit based when it comes to who plays and how much, even though this is obviously what maximizes the team's chances of winning, and is therefore what fans want.

Hof left tackle and defensive end as well and a slew of pro bowlers

Also a more favorable schedule. Dolphins seemed like a quality win but Tua's recent downturn gives me pause. Not really a quality opponent until the playoffs either. May not get clearer answers until then.
