Draft a QB or Re-Up with Darnold?

Watching him in camp, fan fest, last couple games he looks like a veteran. He's making better decisions, understanding his strengths and limitations.

He's not making the same mistakes it looks like to me that the game has slowed down for him, or maybe this is actually the best offensive line he's ever played with.

 

 

He had a pass at the start that was almost picked.

He forced a pass late in the game to Tremble (who was well-covered) in the endzone instead of running it in himself for a score (which almost came back to bite them).

Hardly.

If anything, Wilks took that decision-making aspect almost entirely out of his hands and  just told him "Toss the ball to our RBs.  That's all you have to do".

This whole scenario depends on who else is available in FA. If it's Wentz, Grier, or some random 3rd string QB, you have to consider re-signing Darnold on a backup contract. PJ Walker cannot be the plan, or someone of his caliber if our rookie QB or MC go down or aren't ready. Minshew would be my choice if we're going that route, but there's way too many factors right now to really choose a path.

What would we have to give up pick wise to get one of the top 2 picks?  I would assume 2 1's and 2 2's at least?

Can we lose the idea that if we run the table "Darnold went 6-0?"  However many wins we post between now and the end of the year, it is quite possible Darnold's only role will have been to not do anything to sabotage those wins.

If we make the playoffs then Darnold will have had a reasonably good showing I would think. 

Not knowing any inside info on how much or what their other options are I would look at keeping him around. And draft a QB a year until we get one and then keep it up until we get another as they can be very tradable. 
So that is a little different option. Keep Darnold and draft a lower rated QB too. 
Though with Corral on the roster maybe no need to take one this year.

We already drafted Corral. We start Corral next season and Sam can be the backup if he wants to stay here fro backup money. If Corral is trash, then you have to look at getting rid of FItt, but I already want him gone. You can't find a good QB as GM then you need to be fired. Simple as that.

We could also look to free agency to try and find a QB who just needs a fresh start in a new environment, but who would trust Fitt to make that choice? Well we have no choice but to roll with whomever he selects for now.

Anyway you look at it there will be a QB better than Darnold in the free agency. They won't be great but being better than Darnold is such a low bar.

The only reason he is even on the team is because an idiot gave him his 5th year option when they should have just waited. I don't even care about brining him back to be a backup next year. If the GM can't do better than that as a backup then we need a new GM.

At this point I am in the trade for one. I think we can afford it given this team just needs a qb (and a legit dlineman). But only if they think the franchise qb is there. I do worry about not having draft capital, our FO isn’t exactly an elite franchise and could be crippled by this type of move. But at the same time they will cripple themselves anyhow.

If not just take BPA and see what options are available in the off-season. Sam is kind of null, bring him back to compete or don’t he’s not the future but he’s not going to demand a lot of money either so who cares.

Exactly.  He just tried and failed.

Trent Dilfer is 1-0 in Superb Owls.  He was 7-1 as a starter during the regular season and 4-0 in the playoffs.  Yet the Ravens did not resign him the offseason after he got to touch the Lombardi Trophy.  His participation in those games was that he didn't manage to screw that Owl up, but he tried (he threw a pick six in that Owl that was called back for a defensive penalty).

If the king of not screwing up badly enough was not untouchable, neither is Darnold.

There are a lot of QBs succeeding in the league who weren’t high picks. And a lot failing who were. I’d rather risk a lower pick even with it’s assumed lower hit rate, short of a transcendent no brainer type of talent being there where we could draft him.
