Always fascinating to see things in retrospect. Looking at the old list, feels like quintessential Panthers. We could've done better but could've been worse.

Personally feel McDermott wouldn't have been ready to be HC that long ago but given his current trajectory with the Bills, maybe it would've been similar.

I'd add if there's anything I've learned over the years of doing this, it's the importance of staffing.

One of McDermott's biggest successes is that he hired a rockstar staff. Rhule? Not so much.

Getting those hires right or wrong can make or break a head coach.

McDermott was mature and smart enough to hire a rockstar staff. Rhule couldn't have one of those and still be the unquestioned leader. It says a lot about the two men. Probably a lot about our society, too.

It's fun to look back and see opinions of old:

of the coaches you mentioned, my order is:

Harbaugh

tied for close second are fewell and rivera

Mcdermont is 4th

Grimm is last

I don't like Russ Grimm. Do not want him. the offensive line and run game he is in charge of kind of really really sucks, as does the team he is the assistant coach for.

hell, the steelers didn't even want him to be their new head coach even after everyone thought he would be. just saying.

Not bad in hindsight. I agree that McDermott might not have been ready at that point, still he has proven to be a hell of a HC.

Tepper and Hurney forgot to ask Rhule if he even knew any NFL quality staff. His only NFL guys in year one were Jeff Nixon who he went to college with, and Pat Meyer who had just been fired from the Chargers so he was going to say yes to any O-line job.

I cut Scot loads of slack, cause he creates content and puts in lots of work into many of his posts. He is willing to up stats, team brochures, and history to add to the topic. Yes he was going a little too hard with the creating too many topics(years ago), but hes aware of that now.

So fug off with the edgy hate, hes panther content. No one comes close to his leg work regarding coaches.

I remember everyone was freaking out and just preparing for Jerry to hire Grimm lol

Funny thing about Grimm...

There was a story at the time that Pittsburgh had actually decided to name him head coach. But then the league allegedly stepped in and said something along the lines of "Hey, wouldn't it be nice if the team where the Rooney Rule originated hired a minority coach?"

No idea whether there's any truth to that. I don't recall it ever being verified or checked out so it remains strictly a rumor. I do know Grimm left the Steelers right after (think he went to the Cardinals).

Obviously, hiring Tomlin wasn't a mistake. I do wonder what kind of head coach Grimm would have been though had he gotten an opportunity there or somewhere else.

    • For the silly people that worship her it will be that.  The Coleman 'legend' thing, they did that with another fairly average player that was here and I sort of mocked or questioned the 'legend' status. Instantly caught crap for insulting someone's favorite Panther. So okay, Kurt Coleman is a Legend.
    • You allow him to compete--you all are talking as if I am proposing making him the starter. Give him a new coach, new weapons, good OL, etc. and see what happens. You are saying, "Well Damn.  It did not work for 3 guys..."  Right now, our C is injured, we lost our top 2 WRs.  Better question:  If you need a QB, Why would you not take a chance on bringing in a QB who was a former first rounder, a good arm, intelligence, mobility, youth, etc.  and see how he does out of NY--with a better OL, better running game, better receivers.  I am not saying give him a 10-year contract, I am saying give him a chance. You act like there is no improvement on offense here--it was a 2 year process, and next year is year 2.  To me, how can you sit there with Bryce and an opportunity to sign a veteran QB on the cheap comes available and you say--"Not us. We're good.  We are waiting for Patrick Mahommes."  Jone's problem is obviously mental--and he has little support.  Why is this so frigging hard to comprehend.  It is called "bottom fishing" and it is better than sitting in the boat.
    • I think we're going to fall from behind quite early and be forced to abandon the run game.  3 rushes -2 yards 1 catch -10 yards
