Is Burns really worth backing up a Brinks truck?

Huddle now: Pay all these defensive players the big contracts they want! We need them! No to 1st round picks!

Future Huddle: Why did Fitt pay all this money to these defensive players? They aren't worth that much! We're in cap hell and we're 5 and 12!

Don't forget:

If we trade away Burns, we'll never get another sack again! He's the only one on the roster and only one we could possibly sign for, trade for, or draft that will ever be able to get a sack!

It’s not rare to find a good pass rusher outside the top 10.  The fug are you talking about?

It may be more like top 20 or so but look back at the last several drafts. The majority of the best pass rushers were taken near the top of the first round. Myles Garrett, Bosa brothers, Chubb, Burns, Parsons, Chase Young and now Hutchinson looking like the cream of the crop in his draft year. Similar to QB, you can find later round picks making big impacts on many teams but if you look at the overall number, there's a high bust rate outside of the 1st (and even within the 1st). I admittedly might have overstated it but unlike many positions like guard, safety, linebacker, corner, tight end and so on, it's more the exception rather than the rule that you're day 2-3 rookie pass rusher has hopes of being an impact starter.

No, Burns is not worth the contract he is going to get. He's empty stats. None of his 8-9 sacks a year adds to the win column in a meaningful way. The Panthers should have taken the trade.

people here really believe the “build around the QB” approach is viable and then you get posts like this trying to rationalize why it isn’t working

The first thing we’d do after trading him is try to draft someone as good as him
