Banged-up Panthers defense struggling

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina's Maake Kemoeatu spent some of Thursday's practice on an adjacent field with a medicine ball. Fellow starting defensive tackle Damione Lewis was nearby riding a stationary bike.

The Panthers' defense is banged-up, giving up a lot of points and in an unusual spot under defensive-minded coach John Fox: trying to keep pace with the offense.

I hope to got we get healthy by playoff time.

We need that bye week next week.

Go Panthers.

You know, that struggling defense only gave up 10 points to Denver's high flying offense just a couple of weeks ago. It's not as bad as people think.

There is no shame in barely losing on the road to the defending world champs....especially when you're missing you best run stuffer.

We didnt have the injuries to the D line we have right now.

Not that this has to do with anything. No more than an observation. But did anybody notice that as soon as people started pointing out our relative injury free season, we lost two major parts of our defense. Sometimes it's better to not say anything about the oblivious!

Has the secondary really played that badly as of late??

10 points against "high flying" Denver O and who laid the egg in OT...the D Line...(w/o Kemo who will be back)

So who don't we have...Gary Gibson!?!?! Please...We may be "banged" up ...but comparing to the rest of the league we're pretty injury free.

Yea...lewis is hurt..but if we get the bye he'll be fine...

Yeah, I get that, but the article implies that they have been struggling for weeks, which is really not the case. Even in the Giants game, they played pretty well for the most part. The Giants have pretty much run the ball on everybody they have faced when Jacobs was healthy, so I don't understand why everybody was so shocked that they ran on us.

I told everybody before that game that it was going to be a huge challenge for the Panthers to contain their running game with a healthy Jacobs in the line up.

You must have forgotten the 23 to Tampa, the 31 to Green Bay, and the 45 to Atlanta. The 10 points that Denver was held to would be the anomoly, and the 128 points given up in the other 4 games, would seem to be the norm.

The 45 points in Atlanta is the only one I've spent any time worrying about, but IMO, that was mostly because the Panthers had a problem with starting slow (mainly on offense) pretty much all season up until that game, and the Falcons just took advantage of it in their dome. The Panthers seem to have taken care of their slow start problem since then.

Exactly. People who use the 11-4 excuses or that we won the game or took the Giants to overtime forget that we used to dominate on defense and were very aggressive in the first half of the season. We have been struggling for several games. I agree that Denver was the exception not the rule. If our offense hadn't picked up the pace we would be in the playoffs at all. We won games like Arizona, Detroit, Green Bay and even Tampa with offense not defense. We were outscored 21-7 after halftime against the Giants when the game was on the line. Banged up or not a championship team mans up and rises to the occasion, they doesn't get rolled over like we did. But as you say that is only the latest collapse not the only one.

    • Easily. To be able to plug in a backup LT without much drop off from your starter? That could mean the difference between playoffs or sitting at home in January. Good/serviceable smart young and healthy LTs that won’t lose you a ball game at reasonable $$ don’t just come along every day. Picture next year… the team is scrappy and competitive, 4 and 3 record, second place in the South. Morale is good. devastating run game that Let’s our marginal defense get plenty of rest. We play the Bucs and win, going to 5 and 3, but we lose Ickey to a high ankle sprain. Atl loses that week and are now at 5 and 3 as well. There is no Ickey and no BC because we let him go… and we go in to Atl the next week for a battle of first in the south. Week after that is the Jets…. Now they lose both by 10 and 3, respectively, and fall to 5 and 5 going in to their bye week. Atl is at 7 and 3. Out of typical Panthers desperation, they try to rush Ickey back in to the lineup with a saints game coming up…  Back to good old Panthers football, always playing catchup. Another season at .500 and the fans sadly rejoice in mediocrity, when playoffs were in reach. This team always overestimates its ability to pick up quality o line depth in the draft or FA and it always blows up in their faces. Like Chuba, I see him as being part of the core that Dan is trying to build. Work on his contract now and see if we can come out with something mutually beneficial. I’d consider 3 yrs at $25m to be very fair.
    • it would be great to have "double trouble" again, I even had a T- shirt for Williams and Stewart and the double trouble logo, was a great time to be Panthers fan. We shall see...
    • Sounds like a plan. Those are the teams we should be mimicking! lol
