NYPost article on John Fox...

I disagree with the assertion that we are merely a QB away from having a great team if Fox stays. We are playing with the QB who has brought the team the most success as it is. Jake has been his guy since the start of the '03 season. Fox doesn't seem interested in looking at any of the other QBs on the roster. If he has no confidence in them, then why are they ON the roster to begin with? Again, that would be squarely on the HC. Jake is done as far as this team goes. Jake, like most every other QB/coach tandem, made Fox to a large degree. It's time for a new direction. Let a new coach decide the QB situation. If Jake is to be in that mix, let the new guy decide that and deal with it.

lol New York all of a sudden appreciates soft cover 3 schemes? because that's exactly what they're going to get with him as a DC.

maybe their DC gets fired, but their defense is better off as a blitzing rush the passer Jim Johnson type than the zone cover scheme like they had with Tim Lewis that had them ranked in the 20s.

and as far as HC goes, don't make me laugh. New York doesn't appreciate a passive aggressive "it is what it is" quote quite like Carolina does.

I can't find quick stats on NFC comparisons but from the Panthers site (rosy of course) but he has been good for the Panthers.

There are few challenges John Fox has not met and answered while becoming the winningest coach in Carolina Panthers history. In seven seasons under Fox, the Panthers have totaled 68 victories, made three playoff appearances, won one NFC Championship, claimed two NFC South titles, been to two NFC Championship games and played in one Super Bowl.

In compiling a 63-49 regular season record and 5-3 postseason mark, Fox has demonstrated a remarkable consistency while guiding his team through the peaks and valleys that accompany an NFL season.

• In Fox's first season as head coach in 2002, the Panthers were coming off a one-win season that included 15 consecutive losses and responded with a six-game improvement to go 7-9.

• A year later, Carolina struggled through a three-game losing streak after jumping off to an 8-2 start, but Fox steadied the ship and the Panthers advanced to Super Bowl XXXVIII after winning the NFC South title.

• The Panthers began the 2004 season 1-7 and lost their three top running backs but recovered to win six of the last eight games and narrowly miss the playoffs.

• In 2005, with Carolina's playoff hopes in jeopardy, Fox rallied the team for a season-ending win at Atlanta and guided the Panthers to the NFC Championship game.

• In 2007, Carolina became the first team in a decade to win at least one game with four different starting quarterbacks, carving out seven victories with starter Jake Delhomme sidelined for all but three games with an elbow injury.

• A year ago, the Panthers equaled a team record with 12 victories and won the NFC South for the second time under Fox.

I dont think all the above tells the whole story.

* if the panthers have a losing season and miss the playoffs this year that is only 3 winning seasons in past 7 years.

* After the '07 season Fox/Hurney still havent learned the lesson and done something to have a legitamate QB of the future on this team. This is why that were bad then and bad again.

I agree that we are not one player away from having a great team. But I do believe that if we had better play from the QB position, we would be better than we are. Good enough to at least be in contention for a wildcard spot. With better passing, I think we would have beaten Buffalo, Miami, and maybe the Jets.

John Fox at ND? For some reason, I just can't picture him as a big time recruiter. I can't picture him as a TV analysts either. No, I think he would be much happier as an NFL DC, because then he could just concetrate on coaching and spend less time answering media questions about coaching.

I absolutely agree with that. Heck, if we just had MEDIOCRE performance from Jake, we might be in the playoff mix, with several more wins under our belt. And if that had happened, I doubt if there would be any real discussions about replacing Fox. But Jake has stunk, Fox has stuck with Jake while he has stunk, and so he deserves what he is getting.

People go back to their roots often, but i doubt Fox would take a backseat job after being head honcho for 8 years...

i don't, he'd only be DC for 2 years and then the old fogie's contract expires in 2011 vaulting fox to the top spot.

might make for a nice breather for a couple of years for fox before jumping back into a head position, especially in NY where the pressure would be much more than he's getting here in little ole charlotte!

Why would they fire a guy that just won a Super Bowl 2 years ago for a guy that's never won one?

It's New York.

If Coughlin finishes this season badly enough, yeah it's possible. They were close a while back before he won it.

Not saying it will happen, mind you, but it's possible.

If Fox gets fired he isn't going to take a job as a DC. First of all his salary is guaranteed for next year- all 5 million of it. So he will sit out next year and return as a head coach the following year. He doesn't need the money and with his record here will be a hot commodity. The funny thing is that if he shows up somewhere else he will have the fire back again. Wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in Tampa. Then we would have to face him twice a year.
