Jason La Canfora on the Panthers Future and CMC

With CMC healthy again and productive he becomes an asset instead of a liability. I don't see us eating a huge chunk of dead cap money unless we got some real value for him. Sure he has had his injury issues but when healthy he is the best receiver and running back on our team. He generates what little offense we have. What good would a future 2nd rounder be worth to replace a guy we used a first rounder on and until he was hurt was considered a top player in the league. If we trade CMC we are giving up on the season and that I can't abide. Screw draft picks until the season ends, you play to win and players who lay it on the line deserve management doing everything to help them succeed.

Since 2018 when he became the starter for us we have won a grand total of 17 games out of 69.   He doesnt move the needle like you think he does.

Our issue is the same as it has been since Rhule got here. We don’t have a QB and unlike other top coaches, Rhule can’t gameplan and win without an elite QB. Hell…who knows if he can win WITH an elite QB.

But the issue isn’t the DL, secondary, OL, RBs, WRs. These are all proven position groups at one point or another in their careers. The issue is the QB and HC. No proven track record at those spots. At this point Rhule has used up his bluffs and needs to be replaced. BUT…He won’t be replace during the season.

What difference would that make? We’d be eliminated from the playoffs. We’d have a lame duck coach. Tepper would have to contend with the “did the lame duck do enough to keep the job” talk. Which NEVER works out. Then worst case scenario is even while we’re eliminated the lame duck coach figures out a way to win some games with the only reward being….losing draft status.

I actually think the smartest play if we lose this week (and maybe no matter what) would be to trade CMC and get picks…almost ensuring we finish as one of the worst 3 teams in the league. Rhule will walk at the end of the year I’m almost positive. He’s getting to the point where he’s not even gonna get a good college job if he doesn’t leave soon. You can’t go 4-5 years with zero success and then land an elite job. He could still potentially get one at this point.

He moves the needle more than most in the league at his position. The problem is no position has a bigger effect on the needle than QB, and we have had a terrible run there the last few years.

He had a 1000 1000 season and we won 5 games.  Running backs don't matter.  His production from this season could easily be replaced.   Trade him to Buffalo for a first, eat the money and move on

You can't reason with some of these folks. They would grin like fools and be happy to continue losing as long as they can worship their favorite running back. And you can bet many of them asked other fans over the years if they put one player over the whole team in relation to Cam Newton. Different standards.

It is and it's plain to see. But you keep pooing posts and hoping all this will just magically go away and CMC will become the greatest RB in history bud.

Do you think madden, fantasy owners, and all ranking systems that say CMC is one of the better offensive weapons in the league are racist? CMC fans aren’t just making stuff up when considering him one of the best at his position.

I'm talking bias and you're talking race we're on different wavelengths here. He's oft injured and obviously we are not going to win anything of meaning or major significance with the way we have assembled our offense ie an overpaid RB first and then plug in whichever leftover QB some team is trying to get rid of. We should have planned on drafting a quarterback the minute we decided Cam was done. You and your pals can live your fantasy of the best weapon in football the rest of us want a real QB and a winning football team.

    • The art of playing QB is to throw the ball hard enough to get there and as soft/catchable as possible for the receiver. NFL history is littered with insanely strong-armed passers that coaches were hoping they could teach to be accurate and throw a catchable ball.  Almost all ended in failure.  Turns out it's a lot harder to teach a QB to be accurate than to have the proper technique to get enough zip on the ball to make the pass. The NFL isn't Madden. Very, very few games have a lot of opportunities for throwing the ball 40+ yards in the air unless there is a coverage bust. BY9 has been the least accurate throwing deep (vs short or intermediate), but most of his misses have been long, not short.   I would love for an actual example where Bryce couldnt get the ball there.  There are quite a few examples where BY9s mechanics were bad and the ball lacked zip bc of that. Young needs to stick to good footwork to generate the power needed for some throws. That certainly doesnt mean he cant do it, but like someone like Brees, he needs to throw the ball in rhythm and with good footwork. Young doesn't have an arm that pops like a Josh Allen or Cam, but to act like he can't put zip on the ball is insane and objectively just wrong. I'm personally pumped as hell to see BY9 develop chemistry, especially with someone like JT Sanders he can trust on jump balls. Elite QBs have to make throws from the pocket in synch with the play design, but sometimes the play breaks down and you need a guy you can trust to get a jump ball one-on-one to keep the chains moving and the defense honest. As mentioned, Delhomme somewhat made a living here throwing YOLO balls up to Smitty. I'm personally excited to see what BY9 can do the rest of the season along with the defense hopefully doing somewhat better. Given the entire body of work so far, I don't see a scenario where BY9 should be anointed the starter next season (and we need to bring in legit competition), but Young has shown enough since he came back from his benching to play the rest of the season and be back to compete for the starting job next season IMHO. I'm open to any reasonable debate about that fact.  Just like everyone else here, I want to see the Panthers win first & foremost. With or without BY9. Sunday was the first game (maybe GB last year), where Young looked like a guy worthy of the #1 pick.  I think that is objectively true, even as someone who has been more pro-Young than a lot of this board. There's a long ways to go before even committing to him as the long-term QB, but these last few weeks have shown the first real signs of promise. That should be encouraging to everyone who cares about this team.
    • The reasonable part I think will be tough. IMO, I don't really think he is going to want to resign with us. He seems to be an "emotions on his sleeve" guy that really hates losing. That's not really going to be changing much before his contract will be up. If we want to keep him around it will have to be by tagging or overpaying, IMO.
    • Yeah, taking shots at him after the best game of his career by a very substantial margin is just cringy. If you just hate the MFer just hate him and be honest about it. Don't cover it in some horseshit hot takes and weak insults.
