Is Tepper trying to humiliate Rhule?

Dolphins have looked pretty good this year. They traded away a bunch of assets in 2019 for draft picks. It  just took some time for it to come to fruition. The Tua injury might derail them, but I would push back on the idea they "couldn't pull it off".

But, their goal was to be selecting #1, presumably to win the Joe Burrow sweepstakes.  They finished 2019 at 5-11, good enough to be tied for 5th worst and the #5 pick.  The tanking effort, itself, was a failure.  The Bengals, Foreskins, Lions, and Giants were all better natural tankers than the Dolphins were by trying.

The fact that they turned the assets they got for trying to tank into valuable pieces is a different subject.

Check out Noll’s record of wins and losses especially the first three…

Noll also took over a franchise that had never played in the postseason before. In almost 40  years. And the only way to build a team was the draft. No FA. So it took longer. No comparison to now.

Despite the lack of FA,  the Steelers still showed steady improvement each year during Noll's first three seasons.

1969: 1-13

1970: 5-9

1971: 6-8

The next season they made the playoffs with a 11-3 record in 1972 and wouldn't miss the playoffs for the rest of the decade.

Our offense is getting worse each year under Rhule. He appears to have idea how to choose a good OC or competently pick a QB to run a modern day offense in the NFL.

No Tepper just wants to say he gave Rhule a fair shot. It’s hard to sit at the other side of the table to defend your job when you had 3 years to do it. It also makes other HC candidates feel more comfortable, so they know you aren’t going to yank them out of their office after their first bad game.

I actually dont disagree with this approach. Firing Rhule at this point doesnt improve the team in anyway.

Maybe Tapper is just playing some 3D chess right now by not firing Rhule already?

He knows this is a lost season without a real QB or Coach, but he also knows we have enough talent on this team to still win enough games to screw up our draft position and instead of getting a top 5 pick we end up around 12 and still can't get our QB of the future.

Plus if he fires Rhule now, he owes him a ton of money.

I'd like to think he's keeping Rhule around so that it costs us games to keep helping out our draft pick next year to hopefully get our QB, while also hoping Rhule leaves on his own for one of these college jobs and then he gets out of having to pay him a poo ton of money to GTFO.

  • The Giants had no problem getting Brian Daboll when they fired Judge after two seasons.
  • Jags had no problem getting Doug Pederson when they fired Meyer after one season.
  • 49ers had no problem getting Kyle Shanahan when they fired Chip Kelly after one season.

There are probably more examples but those were the first ones to come to mind.

I know we all wanna bag on Tepper but it’s safe to say this is wishful thinking at best. Tepper knows Rhule played him. Any thought of Rhule leaving money on the table is wishful thinking.
