Rex critical of Baker

And to think that a lot of Huddlers thought that Rhule's handling--mishandling of Matt Corral's development was a reasonable course of action. It wasn't. He never seriously got the kid involved, treating him like an afterthought, and put him behind a sieve of an O-line and said in so many words that Corral had to make lemonade out of lemons. The way Rhule treated Corral was stupid!

Huddlers took Baker and Corral--in a different way of course--for granted.

At this point, Darnold might give us more spark than Baker, and I never thought that I or anyone would say that. Baker seems smaller, in all respects, than I ever thought was possible.

I don't like the way they handled Corral in the preseason but no matter how they handled him I doubt that would've changed the reality of his durability issues surfacing. The guy is on IR and had durability concerns and no matter how he had been developed during camp he would've probably still ended up hurt. It is what it is.

I mean, Rex isn't wrong.

I'm going to be honest: I thought Baker would be better. I expected him to be at least a competent game manager, but he looks lost out there. All of the criticisms of Mayfield like his spotty accuracy (particularly on those midrange second level passes), and his inability to read the entire field (as was basically suggested by Kurt Warner when he said Baker is best when he only has to read half the field), have been on full display. Add in his timing issues, failure to step into the pocket, what I'll call inefficient mobility, and his lackluster athleticism, and I just don't see him being anyone's answer at starting QB. And, honestly, he hasn't shown to be worth the conditional draft pick that we'd have to give up if he reaches whatever threshold of snaps he has to meet. He's playing uninspired football, and I don't even know if he has the ability to put a team on his back (he surely hasn't shown it against what in reality are suspect teams, and I doubt that he will against top tier teams). He's been horrible to be honest. No swag whatsoever. He just looks bewildered. I really wouldn't have believed that he'd be this bad if you'd have asked me a month ago. He isn't our answer.

He’s still better than Sam “Try my best then still the throw an INT, then piss my pants” Darnold.

I don't see how Baker or Sam wouldn't have been hurt behind Rhules third stringers. PJ got twisted up pretty badly behind those guys too. It's a wonder he wasn't injured.

This is what happens when you have a coach that doesn't know what NFL talent looks like, you get a bunch of guys who are getting pushed around not just on third team but first team too.

His stats pretty much sucked, even with the big catch and run from Shenault. I just don't see what you saw. It was a bad performance with no redeemable value. The only real plus is that he didn't throw an interception (which is kind of a low bar that was set up by Darnold's suckage last season).

Maybe interpret it as at the start of the game Baker was awful, then after he got clobbered the one time he was a little less awful.  From watching him last year I think that second shoulder separation was big psychologically.  But, he has to overcome it and start slinging it again and soon or his NFL career is done.

That's a different angle that I have never thought about, so kudos to you for the food for thought.

I'm going to take it a step further: maybe it's not just a psychological thing; perhaps Baker's shoulder injury, non-throwing shoulder or not has had an irreparable effect upon the way he throws the ball--in other words, his accuracy. Perhaps farfetched, but maybe not. In any event, the injury could be in his head as you suggested, which for all intents and purposes may lead to the same lack of good results.

    • Rhule was GM for 2020 and 2021/final say/total control/______/head cheese   Then afters years of trying to find a QB, trepper issued a order to get one at all cost. Even without BY fumble and after the rhule driving the draft/FAs(member erving and elf lollolols) fittererererer was no improvement.
    • Let him play when he is 100% healthy. Still room to learn and improve.
