The Athletic NFL podcast - Whats next for the Panthers

The future for the Panthers is drafting a QB in the top 5 or so in the 2023 draft. The only thing that could change that would be Mayfield somehow catching fire with this offense. That seems impossible at this point because out offense has no identity and doesn't make any sense. Add to that the mind boggling play calling, Icky having pass blocking issues, the o-line lacking power in run blocking on the interior, and the under utilization of CMC in the passing game, and I can't see Mayfield making it. Having said all of that I do think we'll beat the Saints.

Our expensive aging vets, Moton, Shaq, CMC, could all be subject to trade depending on if we can find a dance partner. Normally when you bring in a rookie QB I like the team to unload the vets unless they are on the o-line. The rookie will need the best possible o-line so that he isn't injured or psychologically damaged.

Will Rhule be allowed to coach the final year of his contract. I think so. Tepper has talked about how it takes a long time to turn things around, but I think 2023 is make or break for Rhule.

Corral looked horrendous in the preseason, and yes he was a clueless rookie but still. He looked tiny and too short out there, and his throwing motion made matters worse. Corral will certainly not prevent us from drafting a QB once we jettison Baker, Darnold, and pointless PJ. Flush the toilet, and bring in the future. We can start Corral in 2023 and let our prized rookie learn before we send him out to the wolves. If Corral lights it u and plays like a rockstar, then he's earned the starting spot we're set. The rookie can be the backup until we trade him. If Corral poops the bed, then the rookie takes the reigns.

This is how I see our future playing out, or what I hope for anyway.

Even if Baker picks it up, I don’t really want to invest in him anything outside of what you would a random vet that you would be riding until a rookie was ready.

I want us to draft a top QB prospect and focus on building an offense around that person.    And I want a coaching that believes in that.  Not trying to get the rookie QB to fit what what some retread vet OC has done for years.

-The talk about the pros about starting over with a gm/hc attached

-Some young pieces albeit expensive, not sure how we got in salary cap hell without a qb

-If we keep fitt he probably is going to want to see what MC can do at QB

-our front office doesnt seem to be on the same page in regards to building a team

basically what "basement dwellers" and "clueless" fans have been saying from the beginning.

what was the point of keeping hurney for a year after hiring rhule only to let him go followed by hiring fitt who probably doesn't even like rhule

what should have happened was to let hurney go with rivera and hire a new GM/HC combo. 2020 should have been a complete rebuild, instead we signed teddy to massive contract hoping to make the playoff only to let him go a year later. then came darnold mess and now this season

Sounds pretty accurate.  That's what it looks like from the outside.

I would be happy with a new GM but I see no good path for Tepper to hire one on his own, maybe hire a consultant to hold his hand? Just fire Suliman asap. That guy has done nothing but create a giant mess for no reason other than he wanted to show how smart he was. I don't want to see that guy involved at any level at this point. How you get this bad with the cap without a QB is mindboggling and indefensible.

I have been saying from the beginning.

As some one said earlier, we just need to hit the right HC/GM combo. It was a bad idea to keep Hurney after Rivera was let go. Tepper should have hired a GM and worked with him to get a coach to properly launch the next era of Panther football.

Tepper got rid of the arguably the best coach we ever had (Ron Rivera); and kept a previously fired GM who promptly hired the arguably the worst coach we've ever had (Matt Rule). He then got rid of Hurney and let the Rhule influence the hiring of the current GM. And, as the podcast stated "they're not on the same page."

I wouldn't be in a rush to trade any of our good pieces on offense (CMAC or DJ). If we hit on a young (and inexpensive) QB he's going to need guys like them to help him out on the field. What we need is a offensive minded coach who understands how to effectively use the pieces he has, draft wisely, and knows how to game plan and make adjustments on Sundays.

This too is my hope.  You took the words right out of my mouth.

So Tepper would be content to make this fanbase catatonic and let Rhule coach another season after this?

Last year people said this season is make or break. Now you are saying next season is make or break.

Unless something happens Rhule won’t be coaching next year.

Also next year isn’t the last year of his contract
