What's hilarious about that quote is that he's exactly right and it's something I wish I heard him say early on in his process here. The best teams in the NFL do throw the ball and they do it well. When I heard him go on that stupid running the ball rant last year I rolled my eyes at it and just knew he's another dinosaur in this league.

So this is weirdly encouraging, too bad I've already seen enough of this guy to know he's a bit over his head in this league and we're all just waiting this one out more than likely.

To add to that, had that come out of the chute running the ball and been able to do it even somewhat successfully, they open up the play-action pass Mayfield is good at.

Let's put it this way:  Probably one of the Brown's "musts" coming into this week was to not let CMC go crazy on them.  They probably weren't thinking in terms of stopping him as much as containing the damage.

We did that for them.

Yeah, I think Rhule has officially taken my "most hated" coach title from Shula. I absolutely loathe this dude. I try not to hate a guy based solely on football, but I just dislike this guy period. Seems like a shady POS that will throw you under the bus at any given moment just to save his ass.

You can’t make this up.

First it was you have to run the ball.  And Rhule was Demanding this when Joe Brady was scheming 25 run plays.  Then fires Joe Brady after they didn’t see eye to eye on lack of running the ball.

Now

12 months later.  We don’t run the ball because winning teams pass the ball so we go that route?

Just listened to the presser and this wasnt why they didnt give CMC carries. Another media type offering innaccurate context. Rhule said "Elite football teams win championships that can pass the ball. Teams win when they are able to run to the ball, but championships are won by teams that can pass the ball." He said nothing to sort about CMC not getting carries. He mentioned the calls were there for CMC, but we ran an RPO offense and Baker saw opportunties to pass the ball.

These fuging media types creating narratives bc they get clicks, its just so cancerous.

Matt Rhule is a used car salesman.  He says whatever he has to in the moment.

Ben McAdoo has always thrown at a higher clip than Joe Brady did.

Joe Brady doesn't have a big enough history of play calling to determine what his clip is..

We get it Rhule sucks but you guys don't want CMC getting 30 touches so he can go on IR week 5 do you?

I'd rather know why Foreman didn't get goal line or short yardage carries. Thought that what he was signed for

He is paid to run the ball then he needs to run the damn ball.

I'd have settled for somebody running the ball, other than Mayfield out of a scramble.

It's like our strategy was since they have a good pass rush and arguably the best pass rushing DE in the league, we were going to run pass plays until they wore themselves out rushing the QB.  No doubt they would walk right into our trap and then be all ours.

Had a guy that's supposed to be more of a bruiser in Foreman but I didn't see him get used a whole lot this Sunday either.

Yeah I appreciate the context. I was hoping someone would actually post the interview

Overall it seems a little strange how much hate this engenders. Almost everyone agreed that we ran McCaffrey to the ground and most people thought it was stupid that Rhule wanted to utilize a run heavy offense in a league that is shifting heavily towards the pass. Now that he's correcting his ineptitude, people find that outrageous? I don't get it. I'd much rather Rhule walk back pretty much everything he said and did the last 2 years since it was pretty abysmal rather than stick to his guns for the sake of being consistent.

So this moron had an epiphany since Dec on how to win in the NFL?

His press conferences are pretty consistently awful. I don't really care what he says as much as what he does. Do I think he had an epiphany since December? Not really. Do I think he made a bigger effort to hire coaching staff with actual experience who at least approach competency compared to the crap we had and maybe allow them to influence the gameplan? Hopefully

Well thats the big reason a lot of us on here hate him.  He is just throwing poo at the wall praying it sticks without having a plan to build the franchise.  Basically overhauling your staff when your ass is on the hot seat is the proverbial hail mary.   If I had one question to ask him it would be "please detail the plan and the vision you have for this team going into year 3"

Yeah but I blame Tepper for that more than Rhule. Rhule is obviously way over his head and not cut out to be an NFL head coach. It's on Tepper to acknowledge that and fire him. If he's not going to do that, Rhule trying something different, failing, trying something different, and so on until he either lucks into a winning strategy or gets fired is better than sticking to his guns on a failing strategy. Would I rather have a coach that knows what he's doing in the first place? Of course. But that's not an option until Tepper accepts it.

The problem is situational.  In this game we have a rookie LT, who may turn out to be great, but he's playing his first game opposite perhaps the best pass rushing DE in the game.  Our QB is playing his first game with us, against his former team, and the smart play is to take the onus off him initially.  That same QB is pretty good at play action, which gets set up by running the ball some.  The rest of our OL is mostly playing their first games together, so how they function as a unit is a question mark.

All that points to at least showing the run early to give the OL a chance to establish itself, the LT a chance to attack (and run blocking is his strength right now), the QB a chance to settle, and to set up the play action later, which may just give that stud DE a pause on his rush to the QB.

Might the game plan next week be different?  Sure, it depends on the opponent and what our various offensive units look like after game 1.  And it might be different yet again the week after that based on those same questions.  Maybe McCaffrey gets 22 carries in game 1 and 12 in game 2.

This team is not good enough to "inflict its will" on most opponents.  Maybe not any, who knows?  Truth is, in the NFL being able to do that is rare these days.  So you have to game plan to put the players in a position to succeed.  We did not do that Sunday.  We game planned seemingly without any regard to the situation or the opponent.  Kinda like we have done for the last 12 years, at least.
