Baker Could Be our “Brees”

Done talking to y'all now and can't wait to beat your team with Lobber Legs again. By the way at FSU it wasn't crab legs... Have fun believing that your team will actually have a winning record again with no coach.

Your coach is Dennis Allen, who somehow, is even worse than Rhule.  You have fun with that.

Imagine being a Saints fan and think your team was in a good place as a franchise?

They lost the two biggest elements(Payton, Brees) that got them all their glory in successive years.

Regarding Brees choking.

2020 Playoffs: As a 2nd seed lost to the 5th seed.

2019 Playoffs: As the 3rd seed lost to the 6th seed.

2018 Playoffs: As the 1st seed lost to the 2nd seed.

2017 Playoffs: As the 4th seed lost to the 2nd seed.

2013 Playoffs: As a 6th seed lost to the 1st seed.

2011 Playoffs: As the 3rd seed lost to the 2nd seed.

2010 Playoffs: As a 5th seed lost to the 4th seed.

2009 Playoffs: As 1st seed beat AFC 1st seed. SB Champs

2006 Playoffs: As the 2nd seed lost to the 1st seed.

So I guess actually the Brees Saints played to seed 67% of the time to a 33% choke ratio. All at the end of his career, as well.

Brees was a Charger for two years if I remember correctly. Baker was a four year Brown. They had plenty of time to see if he was the next Brees or not.

Spoiler alert: ...

you don't.

he was a charger for 5 years (drafted 2nd round/32nd overall in 2001 draft). first year he sat behind doug flutie and only saw the field game.

next year ('02) he got the start and went 8-8 and threw 17 TDs:16 INTs, almost 3300 yards.

third year ('03) as a starter he got hurt and had a 2-9 record starting. 11 TDs:15 INTs. 2100 yards. result: chargers weren't impressed and drafted Eli Manning (then traded for Rivers when Eli said he wasn't going to play for the chargers).

In '04, his fourth year in the league (third as a starter), he blew up and even though he threw for less than 3200 yards, he still threw  27 TDs and only 7 INTs and they had their first winning record in nearly a decade.

the next year ('05) he came back down to earth a little but still threw over 3500 yards, 24 TDs and 15 INTs. last game of the season he got hurt pretty bad...messed up shoulder. he was up for a new contract and they offered him one filled with all kinds of incentives and he decided he'd walk. with Rivers sitting behind him he could see the writing on the wall. Had he stayed, he would have eventually become the backup because they had given Rivers a massive contract (6 year- $41mil/$15mil guaranteed).

So he was an ok QB with one really good year out of 5, but it wasn't until he got to his second team that he really took off...when he had something to prove. even then, when he was a free agent, he was essentially the 2nd favorite FA behind dante cuplepper who was trying to come back from an injury himself.

no one expected what he did in new orleans because aside from that one year out of 5, he hadn't really shown much. that '04 pro-bowl year looked like a fluke.

The guy had a torn labrum and still played through 14 games last year. Cut him a break. I think that also shows some damn toughness on his part.

Excusing the production of a starter with an injury for not producing wins if they choose to take up a spot on the field is how you lose. Champions are not made that way and champions do not stop winning/producing if they choose to play injured.

I was against signing Baker, but I’m glad we have him based on how rough Corral looked. I only didn’t want him because I knew Sam and/or PJ could easily lead us to the top pick in a good QB draft class.

We just need a good HC/GM. I enjoyed the Rivera/Gettleman era because we were relevant, but as we saw in the SB, it’s nice to have a coaching staff that elevates the team not just the most talent that wins you games until you get completely out coached.

imagine banking your season on starting a third round quarterback.

Just another point of interest, the injury Brees got in his last game as a charger was a torn labrum.

Why don't you just go away? Go back to that Taint board you swamp mouthed backwoods butt humping reject. Your team is trending into obscurity and the downward fall will begin this season. Get your paper bags ready again moron except for youyou of course I suggest you wear a plastic bag over your face with a tight rubber band around the neck. The only thing that sucks worse than your teams fan base is your cousin you took to your prom. I am also going to enjoy when Sean Payton comes back to coaching and comes into New Orleans with his new team spanking your Taints ass a time or two a year.

I'm not sure who's more delusional, @rippadonn with his Corral love fest or @Iron Saint talking about Jameis being a HOFer. 😂

I'm disappointed in you, @LinvilleGorge! I can cut the previous 2 posters a little slack,  but I know you've been around here long enough to be familiar with my posts to differentiate when I'm being serious and when I'm clowning. Tsk tsk. 😏

The sad thing is it's easier to believe Iron Saint is being sarcastic than rippadonn lol.

So does everyone here just share the same brain and take turns getting to use it? Hows that work, one poster gets to use it for a week or so before passing it on to the next poster or is it like a 1-Mississippi, 2-Mississippi thing? 😂

I thought I was laying it on pretty thick, but I guess not after logging in to multiple quotes and mentions. 😅

Yeah cause Payton was drawing up the perfect plays. If Brees went to Miami instead he would been out of the league 7 years ago.

Payton can draw up plays until the cows come home, but it took Brees to not only execute them on the field, but to perfect them week in and week out for a decade and a half.

There's a reason Payton hasn't had sustained success with any QB not named Brees.

Also you didn't answer my question from my previous post so I'll kindly re-ask to save you the effort of scrolling up multiple pages; so does Payton get the credit for Brees' and Carmichael's successes in 2012 despite not having any contact with them from mid-March through February or so? Same with 2000-2002 Kerry Collins. Pls & thx. 😀

I mean....Pat Mahomes drug a weak defense to a SB title. Joe Burrow almost did. I guess that is what real elite talent does, not need everything to be perfect around them in the playoffs.

But were either of those defenses considered among the worst defenses of all-time? No?

As great as Mahomes and Burrow have looked thus far in their short careers, lets see one of them win 8 games with a defense allowing 29.8 ppg (2015) or 440.1 ypg (2012), much less "drag them to the playoffs". Then we'll have something to talk about. 😂

I expected better of you, friend. You knew that was a disingenuous argument when you made it. 😏

Payton has a winning record with Bridgewater and Hill, and Teddy was on pace to have a career year. Congrats on Brees throwing a bunch of garbage time stats in 2012 while losing a bunch of games.

Well that was an impressive hissy fit.

So, back to your "examples."

In the Brees Choke Era

2020: 5th in PPG Defense, 4th in YPG Defense

2019: 13th in PPG Defense, 11th in YPG Defense

2018: 14th in PPG Defense, 14th in YPG Defense

The examples you cited as "proof"

In 2012 and 2015 the Saints went 7-9 and missed the playoffs. So without any defensive help....they lost. That isn't going to the Super Bowl. That isn't even going to the playoffs.

Burrow 2021

17th in PPG Defense, 18th in YPG Defense

Mahomes 2020(SB Loss)

11th in PPG Defense, 16th in YPG Defense

Mahomes 2019(SB Win)

7th in PPG Defense, 17th in YPG Defense

So, in the three Brees chokes, New Orleans was an upper half YPG/PPG Defense 100% of the time. They were a top 10 YPG/PPG Defense 33% of the time.

In the Burrow/Mahomes SB runs, their respective teams were an upper half YPG/PPG Defense 33% of the time. They were a top 10 YPG/PPG Defense 16.7% of the time.

These were just limited examples. If you want, I can easily destroy the "playing to seed" portion of Brees career. That's up to you.

    • KC has a very good defense this year. It is 5th overall. Yes, still worse than last year, but their offense is considerably worse. Their passing D may be their "weakness" but they still allow fewer than 20 ppg. BY completed several deep passes yesterday, and he was able to threaten downfield in ways he didn't seem capable of before the benching. I'm not necessarily worried about his ability to connect deep anymore. What to me was impressive was that he did all this without a run game. We used the pass to set up what little running success we had. Wild.
    • Solid and fair assessment.   I will say, one of the big things I noticed yesterday was that he wasn't shy to step up into the pocket in the face of pressure.  He's trusting the IOL.  And they took care of Chris Jones yesterday.  We had clean pockets but also good success rate vs. pressure which just hasn't been the case with Bryce.   If he has more confidence the OL gets it done and he can navigate and step up for throws, that's huge.  It's one of the biggest things that's held him back.  He was previously bailing quickly and just too easily throwing away or making dead plays.     He was finding his 2nd to 3rd reads within structure/without bailing in the pocket.  That was nice to see, as much concern I have with him.  And the overall limitations will always be there. Time to back it up this week against the Bucs.
    • Suddenly the Cowgirls look like our best chance for a win remaining. I think the Bucs are playing better than the Falcons of late.  Our lone game versus the dirty birds is in the ATL where we always struggle.  The Cardinals are marginally better than I thought they would be. We are not beating the Eagles, they are starting to roll. I'm saying two at most, next week at home versus the Bucs and the Cowgirls.
