Haven't read all the replies, so I imagine this has probably already been mentioned, but I bet this is a made up injury so Jake can be benched honorably. Kind of like a Japanese ritual suicide, or something.

I think that's very possible. Or it may be that Jake has had a broken finger for a while, but just now decide to reveal it for same reasons.

ESPN reports that Fox would still start Delhomme if healthy:

"But Fox says that if Delhomme was healthy he would not be benched despite throwing four more interceptions Sunday and recording a passer rating of 12.7. Delhomme has thrown a career-high 18 picks with still five games left in the season for the Panthers (4-7)."
