Cut Blocking

The hit that injured Kayvon Thibodeaux has brought it back into public discussion...

Several people are calling for this type of block to be banned (and for the player who did it to be punished) but offensive linemen like Andrew whitworth and Mark Schlereth are pushing back.

Longtime Panther fans probably remember early 2003 when Kavika Pittman was taken out by Keenan McCardell using a similar block. People were livid about that at the time.

Schlereth is correct though in saying that the block is legal (even if poorly executed in this particular case) and does indeed happen all over the league on any given Sunday.

So what say you?  Should cut blocking like this be banned or is this just an unfortunate incident?

I dunno a guy deliberately  lunging or falling at an opponents knees really does seem cheap and unfair.

I also don’t like the “peanut punch” thing when a guy has no interest in tackling a player he just squares up and throws a right jab at the player hoping to jar the ball loose

If anybody knows about cut blocking it’s a Mike Shanahan offensive lineman.  Those teams could run against a brick wall and gain 7 on 1st down.

Shanahan just about always had the late Alex Gibbs on his staff.

Not to speak ill of the dead, but Gibbs was a dirty mother.

I remember the teams more than the coaches, but it was another 1k yard rusher every season.  Dudes they grabbed up at the Y were cutting cartwheels thru massive lanes. It was so different compared to our 3 yds and a cloud of dust mentality at the time.

I used the think the Broncos helmets had a label on the inside of them that read, "Insert running back, get 1,000 yards".

Can’t hit high, can’t hit low. Hey 200lb RB go block this 300lb lineman but only touch him in his chest area. At a certain point you have to accept that a contact sport like football is going to have a lot of injuries.

CMC has done it before, but most RBs are going to have to resort to other means to get the job done.

These guys are out there working at their job, when your boss gives you an assignment you go out and get it done by whatever means necessary. I dont think you can fault the player here because Kayvons foot was planted when he hit him, its not his fault.

Its not really a dirty play, just unfortunate his leg was planted when he took the hit.
