The Next QB...

Mr. Scot

A lot depends on seeing Matt Moore play in more meaningful games.

Sadly, at this point, we really don't know if we're going to see that or not :(

We could conceivably go into next season still not knowing how good - or bad - Moore truly is.

(if this happens, Fox will have really screwed us)

I haven't seen enough good out of Campbell to make me think he's a QB of the future. And he doesn't qualify under 'trusted veteran' either.

The free agent pack is pretty grim. Best hope for a placeholder probably comes from a veteran release.

Pipe Dream: The Jags draft The Golden Calf of Bristol and release David Garrard.

Campbell has been looking good the last couple of games..His strength is in the vertical passing game.not 5 yard dumpoffs in the WCO they run..He is young.I dont see a reason not to get him. This would allow us to draft a WR in the 2nd and a QB of the future in the 3rd.

This would be his sixth offensive system. And add in that reads aren't exactly his strong suit.

Sorry, I just can't get behind it.

I think that we should go for the "cast the biggest net" approach. Aquire a bunch of relatively cheap, young QBs from around the league that are stuck behind a quality vet or have been mishandled by their organization and essentially hold tryouts and see who comes out on top.

A few names that come to mind: Brian Brohm, Chase Daniel, Dennis Dixon, Jason Campbell, John David Booty, Erik Ainge, Brodie Croyle, Troy Smith.

Out of those names, I'm most interested in Chase Daniel and Troy Smith.

You're never going to find a Tom Brady if you don't give guys a chance. I feel too many people focus on the tangibles and metrics when evaluating QB's and are too scared to give guys a chance. Out of the 3 best QB's in the league, one was a 7th rounder and one was the last pick in the 2nd round that everyone said was too short to succeed.

He's no franchise quarterback, but Garrard is a very smart quarterback and one of the most underrated passers in the league. I'd love to have him here.

Yep. Garrard would serve as the placeholder for a season or two while the draft pick learns the pro game.

All of which is contingent, of course, on the Jags drafting The Golden Calf of Bristol and releasing Garrard.

As I said, pipe dream :(

The next QB should be whoever plays the best between:

McCown, FA/Draft Pick, and Moore (if he is extended).

If we get a draft pick and he comes to camp ready to go and plays well during camp we may as well start him. We would in theory have a good enough line to keep him safe and a great running game to keep him out of situations where he must win the game with his arm.

I agree he is a good QB, and doesn't get the glee and glory he should.....but he is also 31 years old.

As I said, a stop gap at most. If that is what it takes then I'm fine with it, but we have to quit with this "buying time" approach.

I don't like the "throwing rookies into the fire" approach.

Yeah, sometimes it works. More often than not, it doesn't.

I'll take the Steve McNair approach over the Kerry Collins approach every time. Someone will likely bring up Matt Ryan, but those examples don't happen often and Ryan looks to be having a nasty sophomore slump anyway.

Pennington, McCown, Volek.

I can probably think of a few others, but those come to mind.

We need a QB that can play for two years, and train the one in the wings.

Personally I like Chad P. depending on if he can still play. He is very smart, a true "pro", and likely can be had for cheap. I have been screaming this for a long time, and all I hear is "weak arm" and "can't run the offense" but that is all BS.

Volek and a 2nd for JStew. Then come draft day we move up with the 2s for a 1st round QB or go QB, DT/NT in the 2nd.
