The Next QB...

Mr. Scot

...should be a placeholder.

By that I mean a veteran guy who can shepherd the team temporarily while a high draft pick (hopefully first round via trade) develops and learns the pro game, ala the Steve McNair approach.

There's nobody I've seen in free agency that interests me as a QB of the future. I'd much rather draft that guy and then let someone else take the reins only until he's ready, however long that takes (hopefully not more than a year or so).

Honestly, I could see using Josh McCown in that role. Possibly even Matt Moore if he starts and shows something, though Moore is more likely to be kept or not kept on a "pass/fail" system if he actually gets any playing time.

Now, if Matt Moore actually shows that he can be the QB of the future, then by all means keep him. Given our situation though (beat up team, low morale, tough closing schedule) it's hard for me to imagine that scenario playing out.

So in the end, my suggestion for next year would be a high draft pick and a placeholder veteran.

Other suggestions...Go :sosp:

I have not seen anything from either of them that suggests it's a good idea. At that point, I'd rather just keep Jake because at least he looks funny after he throws interceptions.

I'd say.. mayyyybe Feeley because I haven't seen him play here. But, really, it'd be ideal to aquire a veteran that's currently not on the team.

Either way, throwing a rookie to the wolves is pretty stupid, and I agree with what you're saying.

Pennington, McCown, Volek.

I can probably think of a few others, but those come to mind.

We need a QB that can play for two years, and train the one in the wings.

Personally I like Chad P. depending on if he can still play. He is very smart, a true "pro", and likely can be had for cheap. I have been screaming this for a long time, and all I hear is "weak arm" and "can't run the offense" but that is all BS.

i agree with this.

try moore out the rest of the season and see what we have. if he works out, awesome. if not...just don't re-sign him in the off season.

draft someone early and let him sit and learn/watch. let him get mentored by mccown and jake (who will still probably be here and play the good soldier role).

go into next year with mccown as the starter.

i'd prefer that jake be gone because there are too many players/coaches who will still have emotional ties to him so it would be hard for mccown and/or the new guy to get a really fair shake.

Troy Smith. I'm seriously going to ride this guy's nuts until they fall off, he has all the skills you want in a pro QB he's just short. He could honestly be the QB of the future and while he wouldn't be the next elite QB he will be good enough to win us games, and taht's what matters.

Jason campbell.

QB in the 2nd or 3rd round.

/thread

I haven't seen enough good out of Campbell to make me think he's a QB of the future. And he doesn't qualify under 'trusted veteran' either.

The free agent pack is pretty grim. Best hope for a placeholder probably comes from a veteran release.

Pipe Dream: The Jags draft The Golden Calf of Bristol and release David Garrard.
