Rhule on Baker beyond 2022 (and did Rhule let something slip about his standing with the current FO?)

This is a two-prong discussion, with one point being about Matt and the other about Baker.

Was just watching his presser and when asked if they could see Baker as the long-term solution beyond this year, he responded that the media knows him well enough that he isn't going to talk about guys' futures, then said, "I'll leave that up to Scott and Dave."

Now, that could just be coach speak deflecting responsibility in order to sidestep a question, but when asked about cuts and roles and potential additional signings, Matt had no qualms with throwing himself in there as part of the process.  Could it be Matt accidentally acknowledged he doesn't have much say in anything pertaining to the future because that say was taken from him and he is coaching week to week, essentially?

And interestingly enough, I was just thinking about Baker earlier and what our next few years look like in regards to him and the QB spot now.  I don't doubt we could take another shot at a QB next draft to develop, but with what we know right now, this is now Baker's team and Matt Corral looks a long, long way from being ready to positively impact an NFL game from what we saw, and now he's injured.  I'm thinking Baker is going to be here as the starter for the foreseeable future now.  Had Corral looked better, maybe that would've changed things, but we have seen Baker perform on this level, know what he's capable of, and despite the dysfunction and lack of continuity around him in Cleveland, he had sustained periods of Top 10 QB success, stat-wise (especially when not playing injured), and has won a playoff game.  We know he can be successful on this level.  This is his team now, and I don't just mean because he was named starter for week 1...  he's the starter for several years to come, at minimum.

Rhule has been saying anyting roster related is "Scott's territory." It was a noticeable difference this past off season. I think we had this exact same discussion back in march when he deferred to Scott during FA.

I hope Baker isn't part of the future... First of all he has proven he isn't a franchise QB and second we have no money next year what so ever. Literally 31st in the league in cap space somehow with Burns, Chinn, etc coming up.

I may have missed that one, but I guess the point is validated, be it today or back in March, as you said...  it clearly appears that Rhule is no longer involved very much with the personnel decisions and they're having him focus on just the coaching.

I dont think Baker is long term solution yet. Its way to early to say that. The guy is not with Cleveland anymore for a reason....they put a complete roster around him and turned away from him. Also, you dont set low expectations on this team for him to be the long term solution. That would just be incompetent, he has to show he can be better.

Some people here are okay/want mediocrity and I will not stand for it.

Very possibly. If Mayfield plays well and Rhule shows poorly, it's something.

The Browns never had a complete roster around Mayfield - just one of the most overhyped. Defense was poor to middling until the second half of 2021, after Mayfield's injuries mounted. WR room was amongst the worst in the league. TEs were meh. Chubb is amazing, and Hunt, when not-injured was good, but he was injured all last year. The vaunted OL was ravaged last year - tackle play was terrible. 

Browns rosters in 2018, 19 were poor. 2020 had solid offense, but poor defense. 2021 was a comedy of errors from Mayfield and Stefanski on down.

Let's see how the season goes. If Baker has a decent season, it will be a huge improvement over anything we have had since healthy Cam. That would be tough to turn your back on.
