Carolina frequently had a strong first driven that resulted in some points. It was everything after that first drive that was Rhule-esque lack of strategy and inability to stay competitive.

Yeah but there were instances like the Vikings game where Sam actually had that great drive to tie the game only for the defense to just let them march right down the field in OT.

 

There was more than one game we could have won where they let the other team just march down the field.

I would say that this really proves little. 

The elephant in the room is the turnover differential. Our offense was ranked 29th.

I've seen the narrative that the defense was only bad because the offense left them on the field.

If the defense was only bad in the second half or the 4th quarter, then maybe I could see that.

They were bad from early on in the game.

Right, but that's 1 of 10. It takes a lot of failure to lead this category.

Ehhh, although it had its holes, that defense was good, but the reason they lost all of those games after having a lead was because the offense was so abysmal that they got no support or points in 2nd halves.  It's like having a Cy Young Winner throwing a perfect game but batters that can't hit.  The defense did what they could and just wore down the longer it went on.

At this point, we're just going to have to see what's what during the season. There's really no more need to debate it. No one is going to convince me that it's a bad thing that we were the #2 defense in yards allowed. Will that make us winners? Hell no. But it's better than being #31 in yards allowed. It means that there is hope, if some things can be cleared up. Certainly part of the equation is limiting offensive turnovers. We must do that to keep leads and win, and it can't be overstated.
