Will the run defense hold up?

I know.  Everyone here is worried about the run D.  My #1 concern on D is the lack of takeaways.

Stats can be deceiving. I remember watching games when we needed to stop the run and get off the field and they couldn't.  I remember teams keeping the offense off the field by gaining 6 and 7 yards at a clip off them to get the first down....not that the offense was worth a fug. It happened more so then not.

And the stats back that up.  We were 18th in first downs.  That's not top half, that's not top 10.  Its below average.  Its just not bottom of the league.  We were bottom of the league in takeways, which is hard to see because, its hard see something not-happening.

I don't think the stats are deceiving.  They show us as a middle of the pack run defense.  Middle of the pack run defenses have some bad games against good running teams, and better games against not so good running teams.

We were horrific during Rivera's last year.  The worst in the NFL.  Historically bad irt ypc.   We made bad teams look like the 1970's Pittsburgh Steelers.  We got a little better in Rhule's first year and improved a little more last year.  Hopefully, we can continue the trend of improvement this season.

Was I misreading/listening or do I recall last season around week 3-4/up until week 3-4... .....wasn't our run defense "technically" one of the best in history statistically?. Or was that pass D or total D? I remember a couple announcers saying something along those lines. And the local Cowboy ass clown I work with going off since Zeke and Pollard pulled off such a game vs our "highly ranked defense". 

And didn't we go all season without a TD against us on the opening drive? For a team with a rep for bad run defense that's still impressive. 

Hell if we could have kept the same energy we had on the opening drive (both Offense & Defense) throughout the entire game we would have been a hell of a team.

You remember correctly.  

Teams started physically running down our throats. 

With the time our defense was spending on the field every game,  it was a disaster.  

Fielding an actual offense will help a lot. 

Upgrades to the linebacker group will also see dividends.

The DC and HC are the same and running the same scheme. Since you're a homer and have a hard time understanding anything other than "Panthers good", this is the biggest key factor in why the defense will perform mostly the same.

The funny thing is homers like him will usually slink away when the losses pile up while the rest of us keep showing up to talk Panthers.

Yep and before that game we had statistically the best defense in the NFL. Dallas switched approach offensively and of course we never made an adjustment on either side of the ball. That second half set the tone for the rest of the season.
