Joe Brady revisited

At LSU, Brady simply had better players.  It is difficult to gauge how strategic he was when countered with resistance.  He got figured out and we had no answers.  Sure, a bad OL made that difficult, but all I heard from other teams was a boastful and condescending attitude that they knew (based on formation and motion) exactly what play we were running.  DBs broke on the ball before WRs did---so I am not buying that he was a scapegoat.  He never proved he could outcoach anyone.

Not only that, but he wasn't even the only OC. They had two where he was the passing game coordinator.  He got to call the passing plays for Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, and Terrace Marshall. Hell, they had Leonard Fournette running the ball and catching passes out of the backfield.  That is a murderers row of college talent that simply out classed their opponents and hid his deficiencies and we thought he should go from that to NFL OC.

Both Temple and Baylor sucked when he took over and were lacking in talent. He was a very good college coach.  That doesn't always (and almost never when you think of it) translate to the NFL. Didn't for Saban or Myer either.

From what I've seen, it looks like Dave Aranda is doing better at Baylor than Rhule did. I do agree he's better suited to college though.

When I look at Rhule, I see less "head coach" and more consultant / efficiency expert. He comes to your team, helps improve some things and then moves on.

That doesn't really work in the NFL of course...

For every Haason Reddick, there's a Tahir Whitehead 😆

That applies to every college team.  Rhule didn't draft him.  The Lions did.  He brought him here partly because no one wanted to come to a team in total rebuild.

Of course the HC's job is to win games.  Its funny though, I thought this thread was about poor Joe Brady and how his talent was wasted here.

Whatever.

The huddle's Joe Brady fetish apparently is alive well.  Vomit

Good luck telling that some huddlers.  They won't listen.

They love them some Joe Brady.

This isn't a "Joe Brady fetish". It's a discussion.

My longstanding opinion of Brady (expressed within this thread even) is that he was handed an OC job way too soon. He needed to start as a position coach and work his way up but the NFL's "Sean McVay fetish" landed him a job he wasn't really qualified for yet.

Unfortunately, he was also working for a guy that's equally unqualified for his job.

Matt Rhule can't even mesh with his own offense. Matt Rhule can't get out of his own way. Matt Rhule wants to ride failed NFL QBs to "victory", collecting them. Matt Rhule, instead of riding on the back of a new rookie QB and the hope and optimism he brings to justify getting a couple more years on his contract to "build" around him wants to again bet on a failed and flawed gum wrapper of a QB. Matt Rhule is saying to Ben McAdoo "your QB don't matter", recycle THIS instead.

Matt Fhule. We went from respectable to laughing stock bottom feeder in short order.

So much for the Joe Brady appreciation thread.

I want coaches who have proven their talent at the NFL level. College OCs can go to a big school and have track stars outrun DBs and look like geniuses. College HCs can make a great sales pitch and recruit above what the school should be able to get, but that doesn't translate to the NFL.

Now all we need to do is fire that other unqualified guy and go get an actual NFL head coach.

Rhule was more qualitfied than Brady.  Rhule actually had been a winning HC before, albeit in college.

Joe Brady had never ever been a OC anywhere.

Someday Rhule will move on either because he's fired or he takes a college gig, but it won't be anytime soon.   When he does, I'll celebrate the new coach with the rest of you.

That day might not be so far off as you think it is.

All indications are Rhule needs to do something to save his job this year.

It's far from guaranteed that he will.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
