Joe Brady revisited

Mr. Scot

Honest NFL is a former NFL scout who posts a lot of play analysis. Pretty good follow if you're into the nuts and bolts of football.

His opinion here is that Brady was "scapegoated" and ultimately let go more because he didn't mesh with Matt Rhule than anything else.

Heard that a lot.

There's also the clip of Robbie Anderson blowing up after a pick because, despite the defense knowing and sitting on the routes, we weren't changing them up

I knew when Robby was out there telling the team we needed to run some hitch and go routes because the opposing defense was sitting our routes and we did nothing but run the same poop add nausea Joe was a problem. He didn't adjust the offense, we just ran the same poop the whole game. One CMC went down it was over. Yes Sam is terrible, but Joe doesn't adjust.

And he could get away with it at LSU.  Knowing what's coming and not being able to stop it is still problematic.

I think Brady suffered somewhat from the league's current and fervent desire to find the next Sean McVay.

Had he gone the normal route of working his way up from position coach and things like that, maybe it would have been different.

You can't simply "out talent" people in the NFL. In college football that is the most time tested, successful strategy of all time.

No mention of 2021 after a year of tape is out there on his offense.

Even playing along and ignoring 2021 entirely and solely focusing on 2020 when he had Teddy who was extremely comfortable with the offense and knew it like the back of his hand combined with the fact there was nothing on Brady in the NFL yet - I'd be real interested in seeing how those call charts stack up from 2020 in the first quarter vs the 3rd quarter and subsequently how they stack up in the redzone.

I suspect they would confirm what everyone saw on the field. Our scripted opening drives were very good. He continues to do the same in the 2nd half but defenses adjusted. We didn't.

All very indicative of someone who wasn't quite ready.

Doesn't even touch on our redzone woes.

Brady may still end up being a stud OC in this league. But he 1000% wasn't ready and I'm not sure he was scapegoated at all - we simply could not continue to go through his growing pains with him.

That is what I was saying--college football games are decided during recruiting.  NFL games are decided by game planning.

That particular observation is likely pertinent to several of our coaches, including that guy at the top of the food chain.

In college, you can just do what's working throughout an entire game and win because the other team probably doesn't have the players to stop it.

In the NFL, you'd better be able to adjust.

If you can't, then that whole checkers vs chess saying applies.

At LSU, Brady simply had better players.  It is difficult to gauge how strategic he was when countered with resistance.  He got figured out and we had no answers.  Sure, a bad OL made that difficult, but all I heard from other teams was a boastful and condescending attitude that they knew (based on formation and motion) exactly what play we were running.  DBs broke on the ball before WRs did---so I am not buying that he was a scapegoat.  He never proved he could outcoach anyone.

he had Sam Darnold, a bad OL, and a rookie RB who couldn't catch as his primary cooking ingredients.    Maybe he sucks.  But who doesn't get "figured out" when asked to cook w/ that.   That's what everyone ignores about Brady's one disappointing season in college and pro ball.  No OC is going to make an O work week in and week out w/ that.

You become too limited in your options of what you can call.  Sam Darnold can turn the perfect playcall into a bust of a play.  And you already are limited with him to begin with. Chris Simms did a good job breaking down how Sam screws up basic plays that should work.

Joe Brady might of been a problem.  Bigger problem clearly was Rhule and what he gave Brady IMO.

The anonymous quotes about us doing a bunch of "college stuff" were very telling.

I don't think that will change until Rhule is gone. It might get better with more NFL minds in the building but our DC is still predominantly a college guy too(a few years in the NFL under his belt).

Production is what matters.  Joe Brady has never been a good OC for any team anywhere at any level.

He was lucky to have a HOF QB and basket of HOF wrs with a pro ready offensive line in college.  Anyone ignoring what those players went on to do in the NFL and still attributing any of that to the passing game coordinator is fooling himself.  Joe Brady is a snake-oil salesman.

I am not going to miss other team's QB's discussing how we run the same routes over and over so they can sit on the routes for ints.  I am not going to miss a sub-par run game performance, even when CMC is in.  I'm not going to miss lack of adjustments mid game.

I will never understand the absolute Joe Brady love here.  Sam performed worse for him than he did at the Jets.  Some genius.

Go ahead, post the excuses.

Yeah, not a Phil Snow fan at all.

I think most of the praise he gets comes from those early games last year, but it didn't take long for opponents to figure him out and he never came up with any sort of answer.

That "number two defense" thing is a total crock.

    • The agenda was building around Bryce.  2 WR, 3 olinemen, TE, and a potentially elite RB.  I stood up for Bryce all last year because I didn't think you could evaluate him properly with what we had last year in coaching, play calling and personal.  Bryce was the 2nd least pressured QB in the last 2 weeks because of the money Morgan spent on the line.  Despite Bryce looking horrible I'd say Morgan has had an exceptional beginning as GM. Here some more things I liked. Trevin Wallace looked like a banger in preseason.  Resigned Brown.  Gave Horn his 5th year option and Horn is playing very well. *Flipped a 7th round pick for a starting CB in Michael Jackson who has also played well. Filled a depleted roster with solid vets and if you really look at the cap this is a 2 year play.  Almost everyone except the 2 elite guards signed a 2 year deal. Did not pay Stephen Gilmore 10 million for one season. *Got the 0-2 Rams 2nd pick next year. Set a culture and tone of the type of players we want.  *Dawgs. *Elite GM moves.
