So what happens with Darnold if Baker is the starter

Never say never, some team could lose their starter in training camp to an injury, sexual assault arrest, drug trafficking charge, murder for hire plot, the list goes on and on.

Or like, twenty plus lawsuits maybe...

Nah, that's too farfetched 😐

Baker knows nothing of our system and team and camp is a few weeks away.

Doubt he starts.

Darnold vs Cleveland is probably more likely because he will be the better QB at that time.  The moronic thing to do would be to cut him even though we have to pay him, just to make grudge holding fans happy.

Then they get to see Baker look inept because of a short playbook while getting killed by his former team.

What a great first week Sunday on the Huddle that would be

NAS is right though. Darnold is pretty much in the same boat.

I'd say Mayfield is a capable enough starter that even if he's running a stripped down system, he should play.

In my opinion he has to be cut or traded.  We can’t have Matt Corral as a third stringer, he needs reps in practice to develop as our future QB if we decide to move on from Baker.

Sam is the backup.  To tell you the truth I don't think Sam is a NFL caliber QB to any team in the league.  Maybe a team who has a proven and quality OLine who could protect him and give him to time to make his reads. Corral needs a full year or 2 years of studying before he is thrown to the wild animals of the NFL. We can hope for an injury to a 2nd string QB on another team and they would take Sam to be the backup

I see the team keeping three QB's this year.  Even if Corral doesn't even dress out.

Darnold will be holding a clipboard and waiting for either Mayfield or some other starter on a team with a depth chart of one credible QB to go down.

I don't see the Panthers releasing him unless he has a sudden personality shift and becomes a locker room cancer.  The money is spent whether he is on the roster or not.  Walker should be the odd man out in this situation.

I also have a hard time seeing who would be interested in Darnold, even if their starter goes down.  Most likely, the sand runs out of Darnold's NFL hourglass in a Panther uniform at the end of this season.

So the FO and coaches are left with another 💩 choice.

(1) Keep Darnold as the Backup (Pro- Maybe we can trade him later and get something for him...maybe/Con- Corral get lets reps and isn't as able to develop, takes up a roster spot)

(2) Cut Darnold and add over 18m to the dead cap (Pro- frees up a roster spot, Corral is the #2 and gets more reps and is active on game days/Cons- The huge dead cap hit, possibility of having to go with Corral early if Baker gets hurt...)

IMO I let Darnold go. Screw the cap. We are basically paying the guy for doing very little (or nothing) either way. If Corral is called to action early so be it. We drafted the kids to play at some point if its a little earlier than we'd like oh well.

Assuming no one is willing to trade, financially, it would make sense to keep Darnold as the backup.  We gain nothing by cutting him, and if someone gets injured, he would be a somewhat warm body.  But Corral needs to be on the roster as well, so it probably depends on if they want to keep three qb's on the roster.

But based on past history, they may just cut him if they can't trade him.

Trade him for a 6th while we eat all of his salary at best. He is a backup but no one is spending much on him.

I just hope we don't just end up cutting him and eating it all anyways but it is possible and better then keeping him and pushing Corral further down the depth cart or having to watch another game with him under center.

Can't see that at all given the financials...

And no, PJ is awful.

For whatever reason like PJ, I feel like we have a way better chance with him needing to come in for the starter. It’s a big change from a pocket guy to a more mobile QB. Also Rhule loves him to death.
