his performance was top tier...so it made him worth it. can the same be said for mayfield?

In Cleveland? Probably not.

It is also fair to point out that Cleveland is...Cleveland.

To me though, the equally pertinent question is the position difference. Does that attitude work as well for a quarterback as it does a receiver?

You can say it did for guys like Tom Brady, Dan Marino and others but then there's also guys like Ryan Leaf and Jeff George. With the difference again being...level of success.

Either way, an attitude of competitiveness bordering on a--holishness was one of the things that people loved about Smith.

But it also had to be acknowledged as a bit of a double-edged sword.

it's a stretch to put him on the level of greatness with any of those guys. sometimes a baby is just a baby.

My go-to answer at this point is that I don't know how good Mayfield's going to be in our system.

Gantt acknowledges in his latest "Old Guy" Q&A that there'll be some adjustments going from his old scheme to McAdoo's WCO style offense.

Will it fit him better? His skill set does seem at least decently suited to it.

I guess we'll see.

At the end of the day, we will have spent 4.85 million and lost a day 3 draft pick to take a flyer on a QB with some youth and upside.   Well worth the risk.

My default just because I've what I've seen here for years now is to kurb any enthusiasm  I'm used to them sucking and me getting disappointed in them. Then they, for the third year in a row, the third year of rhule, get some reclamation project with "upside and potential" for a QB.

I just don't believe in anything this team does. I hope they do well, but I'm done believing in them. I want to see them do something different.

Arm? Not a problem

Balls? Not a problem

Brains? Eeehhh, we'll see.

Certainly hoping that McAdoo and Ryan can bring down those interception numbers.

Just watching that and hearing the announcers at least gives me a little excitement for the upcoming season

For some reason I have had very little enthusiasm at all so far

Been away from my computer for a week (that was nice) been thinking on this trade a bit.

Not a fan.

However, that just means I'm not a fan of yet another "starting QB" for the Panthers, not so much the compensation or the player.

That said, I think Baker is a top half of the league starter right now (if healthy).  We have not had one of those in a LONG time.  If our defense can figure things out, if McAdoo can build an offense around a QB he didn't know he was going to coach until July 4th, if Rhule can just stop making stupid decisions, I think this could be a playoff team in a weak NFC.

We will need good luck (health), and to be able to be competitive every game at home, and most games away, and we could sneak in as a wild card.

1 more move that I would like to see happen, and I haven't thought much about who this person may be, but I would love at least one adult in the QB room.  I know that's McAdoo's job, but maybe move Sam, and bring in a longtime backup or something.  I just think that it's worth trying to bring Coral up with somewhat of a steady environment around him....because what he has right now is anything but.

For me Baker is in the Darnold, Daniel Jones, Andy dalton type tier. The only difference is Baker had a good team around him while the rest of these guys had suckage.

Dalton also took his team to the playoffs in Cincy with a good roster and coaching but he has sucked everywhere else he has played. I hope Baker can be good, but I highly doubt it.

Believe what you will.  I think that Baker is a top 15 QB in the league, something we haven't had in 5 or 6 years, and that we can be moderately competitive with him under center.  I do not think that Sam would allow this team to get to 8 wins.

Unless you are wanting to tank, or have Rhule fall flat on his face to make sure that he is fired, this move put the team in a better situation.

You probably would have thought the same of Dalton in his early Cincy years. He had 20 or more Td passes 4 of his first 5 years and won 10 games 4 of 5 years.

I hope Baker is good for us, but I expect more of the same.

I remember his game really well.  I think Baker has a little more talent, and a lot more balls.  Let's see if we can keep him on script.

See.....

Also Baker getting us to 8 wins is probably the worst thing that can happen, if he cannot get us to 10+ he is not worth starting. We will not be in range for a new QB picking middle of the road in the draft and we dont have the roster built for a rookie QB to trade away future years of picks to move up.

We have, currently enough talent on the roster to keep us out of the top 4 or 5.  We don't have a lot of draft capitol to try to move up to get to the top 2 or 3.

We need to see if Rhule is worth bringing back, if he can't make the playoffs with Baker, we will know that he's not and the whole thing starts over.
