Hornets Summer League Roster

Hornets fall to the Pacers, 96-84.

Leaders:

Nick Richards - 15 Points (63% FG), 11 Rebounds (3 Off), 2 Blocks, 1 Assist, -6

LJ Figueroa - 16 Points (100% FG, 100% 3P, 100% FT), 5 Rebounds (2 Off), 2 Assists, 1 Steal, -7

Richards looks a little more mobile but he still needs to work on his overall coordination and cutdown on the turnovers.

Figueroa looked great with the minutes that he got, he might play his way into a two-way contract.

Why does the Hornets' summer league team always looked so out classed?

They constantly go into summer league with no competent guard play.. How can you judge the big men or wing when you don't have a guard who can run a offense..

I hope the FO neglects PG in summer league because they want to force everyone on the floor to create for themselves. I’m not saying it’s a good development strategy but it would help to know that it’s on purpose and not because they’re asleep at the wheel.

"But while all of that rings true, it’s tough to look past a loss as brutal as the one Charlotte suffered against the Indiana Pacers on Friday night. The final score showed a deficit of just 12 points, but watching the game, it was clear that the Hornets were simply outmatched.

Nevertheless, there were still important things to take away from the contest that had nothing to do with the final score. Players impressed, lineups failed, and Kai Jones took a ton of jumpers. Let’s start there.

1. Kai Jones is confident

That’s a very kind way of putting things. It’s abundantly clear that Jones is comfortable taking three after three, no matter how many he misses. That sort of unwavering belief is great. It means that he’ll assumedly never lose faith in himself. But going 0-for-10 from three-point range is still rough.

Most of the shots he took were good looks, but some of them weren’t even close to going in. Jones’ jump shot looks broken. It’s clunky, too high, and apparently also inconsistent. It’s not Michael Kidd-Gilchrist-level bad (nothing ever will be), but he needs to work on that if he wants to earn serious minutes in the regular season.

2. Three-big lineups are a no-go

Speaking of Jones playing at the four, the three-big lineup was definitely not ideal. In theory, a lineup with Jones, Richards, and JT Thor should be stark on the defensive end, but a little ugly on the offensive end. Well, the offense was definitely ugly, but it’s tough to say that the defense made up for it. Some things just don’t work.

4. Mark Williams is huge

Okay, so this is a bit of a cop out, but it’s true. Everyone knew Williams was a big dude coming out of college, but to see him out there in a Hornets uniform was wild. He made most of the other players look like high schoolers. His sheer size was impressive, even though he didn’t play too well.

Williams’ actual performance didn’t end up living up to expectations. He shot just 2-for-8 from the field and ended the night with five points and eight rebounds, but he also notched two blocks. Just watching the way he carries himself out there is enough for fans to realize that he has the potential to be great on both ends. H’s fearless on defense, has the size to be an amazing lob threat, and is big enough to bully smaller centers. Poor performance aside, fans should be amped about Williams.

. Is it Nick Richards time?

At 24 years old and with two years of NBA experience, Richards should be expected to perform well in Summer League. However, what he showed on Friday could bode well for his future in Charlotte.

I know it's summer league but even on our main roster it concerns me that we don't have that go to killer scorer. We are missing that guy on our roster.

Lamelo stans should be happy because right now it will be him.. Playing the Dame time role with the green light to go for 40 a night..

Jalen Duren is an ABSOLUTE BEAST!!!! Meanwhile we gave him up for a couple bucks b/c Jordan was too cheap. At least I hope that's the reason.... If we had Williams graded higher than him than we were the only team in the league and are beyond stupid. Duren is also two years younger than Williams and better at every aspect of the game including shot blocking.

    • He can say what he feels, but he's not saying "the previous year, the team wasn't very good" he directly called his teammates out and in a way that is flat-out not true. "You are your record"? Oh ok, he's only had 3 winning seasons, but in my mind he isn't a loser, and I bet he isn't in his either - cause football is a team sport and wins and losses are on the team, even when one really bad player (Jimminy Pickles) can basically screw over everything.  And this comes on the heels of his thing about the MVP, which is fine, but also selfish. His teammates consistently went to bat for him... Just feels like he's more about himself.
    • Good point--I think this draft is great for us at this time--At the top of the draft, the DT (DEs/NTs in 3-4) are loaded.  The Edges are deep.  We need to double dip there--hoping to move back so we can add three players to that pool.  In free agency, if I were Morgan, I would focus on DBs and  ILB--fix the back end of the defense.  If he signed a S, CB, ILB, and TE, it would be cost effective.  In the draft, DE, Edge, and WR should be the priorities.  After that, OL Depth, QB depth, DB depth, RB depth.  My Free agent Targets:  TE: Juwan Johnson, Saints.  29, had over 500 yards with Saints. S: Julian Blackmon, Colts.  He will be one of the top free agents--gonna cost us, but not like an edge or WR. ILB: Tyrel Dodson, Dolphins.  80 tackles on just 854 snaps--under 27 years of age. CB: Mike Jackson, Carolina.  He is 28 and had 3 picks and was on the field at all times.  68 PFF score. NT:  best available for Evero's system.
