Couple of front office moves

There’s a lot we can complain about but even the most doom and gloom posters gotta recognize that our scouting department is pretty darn good. I know I’m not allowed to talk about positive things in regards to this staff but you really can see what they’re attempting to do. Draft athletes and coach them up….so far it’s lowkey working at least defensively.

Fitterer was given permission this offseason to remake the personnel department as he saw fit.

I'm certainly not a big Tepper fan, but that's one move I see as a positive.

Defensively yes.

I think people forget just how underwhelming that defense was in '19... Ron's last year here. For all the "names" that we brought in, I was pretty  disappointed with the outcome.

'19 defensive roster to name a few: Irvin, Mccoy(he did go off in one game iirc), Poe, Boston, Reid. Mind you, Keek was still playing at that point. We did manage to get a few sacks though w/ Addison and Irvin.

As for the scouting, the idea seems to be bring in guys with the physical traits you cant teach and coach'em up on everything else.

One of the fastest teams in the NFL. And after seeing some of the athletic profiles of the guys coming out of Baylor the last couple years, I'd say Rhule is using his college strategy with hope that it translates at the next level.

I think that's really a TBD at the moment. Given our free agent moves in recent years, it's hard to get very excited about what the pro scouting department has done.

Same with our college scouting department, given the rather uneven performances of most of our draft picks.

But the question is whether that's those departments struggling or our GM/Head Coaches?

The results definitely have been subpar overall. At least so far.

Still TBD, but free agent moves after Dan Morgan came aboard have looked to be better.

We will see. I have yet to see a good Matt Rhule era FA signing aside from Reddick. Which, he only stuck around for a year, so how good was that really?

Not sure I could throw any of this blame on Dan Morgan, though. He is an assistant to an assistant. He isn't making these calls.

Morgan has a solid pro personnel background. In the personnel area, he's second only to Fitterer.

He wasn't hired until after most of last year's free agent moves had already been made so he wouldn't really have had a hand in those. This year, I'd say he had more influence.

Hence the assistant to an assistant. We think Fitterer might have more power but until that is official, he is technically an assistant GM to Rhule.

Yeah, on paper this offseason seemed good but outside the OL signings, a lot of the guys everyone thought were good signings last offseason failed. Reddick was literally the only one that panned out.

So, I will definitely withhold judgement. Especially since, on paper, our defensive line signings don't look nearly as impressive as last season.

Teams around the league are watching Dan Morgan's work, and waiting to see him build the Panthers into a good team. If that happens and the record improves (0% chance under Rhule at least), he's either got to be promoted above Unfitterer, or he's going to another team as the actual GM.

Teams have been high on Morgan for years now, and while the Steelers gig was early for him, he's got the chops to do it somewhere. May as well be here.

Ionannidis, despite being a Temple player, was a good pickup. And remember there's a second-round DE who's getting his shot alongside Burns this year, whether we believe he's ready and qualified or not. Generally worth kicking the tires on a year of starting a DL if you burned that high of a pick on him.

At LB, losing Perryman sucked but he flat-out didn't want to play for Matt Rhule, and I wouldn't either. So no hard feelings there, plus he's on my second-favorite team now. Bringing aboard Littleton isn't a bad move, and Damien Wilson, before his off-field troubles, made decent sense.

I think the defense will disappoint people this year if they expect it to be top-10, but my belief is that there are enough pieces that it won't prove right the people who think it's bottom-10.

I think the defense will disappoint people because Phil Snow isn't as good a DC as people think.

    • I mean that’s not an argument I go with… But in ACC play, both Clemson and SMU covered the spread more than Miami.  Miami didn’t cover in 3 games.
