Even if that happens it changes basically nothing about the future. Baker becomes an FA, as does Sam and you reevaluate. That’s why I don’t mind this it carries basically zero future risk.

This. We're eating Sam's cap hit no matter what. If we get the Browns to eat a good chunk of Mayfield's salary and it costs us a mid-rounder to kick the tires on a former #1 overall pick who a couple of years ago looked like an up and coming elite young QB then do it. God knows the Panthers have pissed away mid-round picks and/or a few mil in cap space on a helluva lot worse investments than that.

I agree with the premise, but I'm afraid they'll extend him for more than he's worth.

INB4 5 year Baker Mayfield contract extension before he ever plays a down.

He would have to really perform, like basically get the team into the playoffs perform. And look if you extend him for 2-3 more years and continue building the roster you could do that in a financially responsive manner. The fact of the matter is there will always be a contingent of teams that don’t have a quarterback as good as Baker Mayfield.

And I get that he seems douchy and arrogant but honestly this team has been so soft the past few seasons I’d almost welcome someone that cares too much.

Give a 5th and I’m good with it. Baker is a decent quarterback and I don’t think Corral is good enough to be thrown to the wolves just yet. I do know I refuse to watch 17 games of Darnold this season though.

You don't want to kill the spirit of a potential great QB by putting them in to start.  Give him time.

After all these years as one of those haters now you're singing kumbaya...

For the 50billionmillionth time, Franklin ... I don't like Cam's personality ... I've never been against him playing and winning as a QB. I do think he's no longer 2015 Cam though ... but never have I said he's garbage at the position, etc. I'm talking about backing the QB ... not backing his character. We already have people crapping on Mayfield's personality.

What happened to saving the cap, rolling it over and tanking?   Baker is NOT taking us to the SB.  All winning a couple extra games gets you is less cap and lower draft pick.

You are posting the exact opposite shlt on two different threads.

$5 million for a potential franchise QB is worth the risk over a pass rushing specialist, with limited snaps that's looking to cash in on probably his last contract.  See the difference?

This is such BS.  His third season he made the playoffs so everybody thought he was great.  Teddy Bridgewater had MORE YARDS PASSING in 2020 for the Panthers,  than Baker did behind one of the best lines in football.  They were 24th  in passing yards in 2020 and 3rd in rushing.  What a joke.

Yeah, Teddy had like 100+ yards more passing than Baker in the 2020 season.  Ouch you got me.  How about TDs and INTs, you know what wins and loses games?  Teddy was 15/11.  Baker was 26/8.  Baker's rating and QBR was better than Teddy's too. You cherry picked the stat that Teddy beat Baker in, BARELY... literally they were #17 and #18 respectively in yardage.  For perspective Daronld was #28 and that's currently who's our #1, not Teddy, so....

    • The other draft picks have turned out pretty well. Brooks will too.
    • I'm still not touching Hunter He again said the other day that he plans on playing both sides of the ball in the NFL.  If he is allowed to do that, he won't be as good on either side as his potential and he's going to have serious injury issues and have a short career.  If he's not allowed to do it, I think he's going to become a problem when the team isn't winning as he's going to feel him not being used on both sides of the ball is why. He's being coddled in that environment with Deion and I think it's doing a disservice to him to prepare him for life in the NFL where your coach isn't a 2nd father to you, to where you can just walk into his locker room and steal his shoes like Hunter does to Deion.
    • He’s a tad behind them. Around 15ish of 32 starters in the league. He’s well ahead of a lot of guys. Tua, Bryce, Cousins (present), Rodgers (current), Devito/Jones, Minshew, Russ (current), Watson, Smith, Carr, T Laws deep ball is weak as poo IMO, there’s plenty. And it’s not like everyone is ripping 60+ers. The key component is if you can rip and maintain velocity of the 30-40 yarders which he does super well. Legit every report out there from Brugler to PFF to PFN document him as good/above average arm strength.  Eye test tells me it’s pretty much that as well, slightly above average.
