Mayfield is a reclamation project. He's gotta get out of Cleveland to start that. As soon as he's out he can come out and ah shucks it up and simply say that he was doing what he had to do to get himself out of the "Mistake by the Lake".

You seem to think that demanding more money is his way out. 

 

I believe that it would not only not work, it would damage his already shaky reputation.

 

The longer the season goes on, with no movement for Baker. The better the odds are that some team may come up with an offer the Browns will take. But as of right now? The Browns are not moving off their stance.

If he holds out, he loses the money and an accrued  season.  Similar to the Leveon Bell situation.  Baker is not going to hold out and lose all that money.  It’s only guaranteed if he reports.

I suspect they would just go the Deshaun Watson route and pay him to stay home. Better for both of them.

I mean, I understand what you're saying, but I think there are layers to this which everyone is aware of, and as such I don't necessarily buy into the opinion that he'd be torpedoing his future by playing hardball with the Browns. Sure, I don't think Mayfield is all that, but I do recognize that I could be wrong and that he has enough questions around his career that someone may still want to take a chance on him. That being said, if  someone really believes that Baker has untapped franchise-level talent---value, then he's going to get another shot, regardless of what goes on with the Browns.

There are a myriad of ways this can go. But Baker demanding more money? That ain't one of them.

I agree, but LG was just musing and licking his chops over imaginative possibilities. Mayfield demanding more money would make for a helluva soap opera.

No he doesn't.  The Browns have him by the balls.  He signed a contract, they guaranteed his salary this year.  If he holds out, he doesn't get the year credit, so he would have to play for the Browns in 2023 under that 18 million.

Now, the Browns could ask him to NOT report.  They would still be on the hook for his salary in that case, but Baker would get his year credit and the ability to go wherever he wants next offseason.  It also wouldn't preclude him being traded in the future . . . but that's another (*@# show waiting to happen.

It's just a completely toxic situation for all parties because it was handled incredibly poorly.

Unless the rules changed in the last CBA, as long as Baker reports by Week 10, he gets credit for an accrued season. By that point, the Browns season could already be in deep trouble.

I think swapping Sam for Baker is the best for both sides. We get a one year rental and they get a starter while Watson is out, win/win or lose/lose depending on how you see it.

I can't see them taking on Darnold. If we actually think Corral is the future I'd stay away from Baker's toxicity. You can be toxic IF you're elite.
