Report: Panthers staff not all on same page about acquiring Browns QB Baker Mayfield

Recommended Posts

Why waste any more time and resources on obvious backup trajectory guys trying to relive glory lost? The NFL knows what Baker Mayfield, Gimmy G, and Sam Darnold are, the Browns, 49ers and Jets already spent millions trying to figure that out. Why throw good money after bad?

Stop the foolishness.

Let's eat!

To me, the obvious solution/outcome for both the Panthers and the Browns would be a trade of Sam Darnold for Baker Mayfield straight up. The money is a wash for both teams and both teams get a new QB to sell to their fan base. Cleveland simply sells the idea it was our terrible line plus a greenhorn OC that caused Sam's issues and that Darnold will thrive under Stefanski's QB friendly system.

The thing most likely holding it up is the uncertainty around Deshaun Watson's suspension.

I think the Browns feel good about Jacoby Brissett getting them through a six-game Watson suspension. They will want another option if Deshaun is out for longer.

I would take that solution in a heartbeat but I am curious to know if Carolina has even tried to use Darnold. Or if Cleveland just immediately balked.

I've heard Darnold get mentioned in a Jimmy G trade.  He would not be a threat to Lance, played football in California and at one time Shanahan was interested in trading with the Jets for him.

The Browns can't sell Sam Darnold to the Browns fanbase.  The fanbase are connoiseurs of horrific QB play.   They know Sam Darnold existed before Carolina.

Sam isn't a starter.  Sam Darnold isn't a backup QB.   Teddy Bridgwater is a backup QB.   Sam Darnold serves no purpose on a NFL roster at this point.

I would assume if he was dangled in the Jimmy G talks that he was in the Baker Mayfield talks, as well. Maybe Andrew Berry literally answers all Scott Fitterers calls, "Hi Scott, we still don't want Sam Darnold. What else did you want to talk about?"

So, it must be a slow news time for Mary Kay Cabot. Pushing conjecture and speculation based on month-old news reports. None of this is anything new, not even the painting of the Panthers FO as being not on the same page. Like I said, I can do without it.

Why would they have to sell fans on a backup qb who's not gonna be on the roster in 2023?

Browns fans are smart enough to know that Darnold is just a means to an end - getting Mayfield out of town.

But why would they rather have Sam over Baker?  I mean, what's the point.

No distractions for the team.  Sam will pretty much keep his mouth shut and do what the coaches ask him.  Still younger and might do him some good to sit as a backup for a while and try to learn to read defenses better.

The Browns bridge/relationship with Baker is irreparably damaged. Baker doesn't want to be there and the Browns don't want him there. Sam is just someone new/different to survive the season if Watson gets a long suspension (6+ games).

Soooo...have you heard that the team may be interested in Baker Mayfield?  The building maintenance guy told me he heard it from his brother in Cleveland.

Noooo! What about Sam? I thought it was reported that he was doing really well now with the NFL's leading QB whisperer as the new OC? He's basically a rookie if you factor in the untap potential or so the Panther's bot leads us to believe.

Lol. I think we can all just jettison the idea of Sam Darnold at this point. He is who he is. He's basically doubled down on what hasn't worked, so he probably has 2-3 years left as an NFL player.

He told me that Sam was on his way out in Carolina. He said the team wasn't going to re-sign him. You heard it here first.
