2022 Pass Protection Expectations

Your conclusion is correct but your premise is terrible. Cam started 5 of those games for us last season and averaged an abysmal 135 YPG passing, compared to Darnold’s 210 YPG in his starts.

What did Sam average after his first four games and the NFL got some tape on him in our offense? His stats are significantly skewed by his first four games that were pretty good.

Y'all Darnold supporters need to explain Joe Burrow then. Year one, gets his leg ripped off. Year two, takes the most sacks in the league. Also year two, takes his team to the Super Bowl. Why is Darnold not playing like Burrow is, though they are in similar situations protection wise?

Solid point, just shows the difference between a franchise QB and whatever Darnold is. One counter argument is coaching, as Burrow has a legit offensive head coach in Zac Taylor calling plays vs us with a college football passing coordinator and then Rhules college roomate at OC calling plays.

Huh? You’re the one who spoke broadly on our entire season’s passing yardage and attributed that to Sam, and I’m pointing out Sam only started 2/3 of the season and way outperformed our other two starting QBs on passing YPG. So our season’s lackluster passing yardage was dragged down significantly by our other two QBs, mainly Cam.

But okay if we exclude Sam’s best FOUR games of the season (lol) then he still had 30 passing YPG more than Cam. So again, your conclusion is correct (Sam sucks) but your premise is pretty silly.

I agree with you but the drop in production could be on some level linked to the loss of Paradis then Erving/Eflein on the oline. Then Darnold’s shoulder injury, I digress im not a Darnold truther I just could see a situation where with a better OC/oline that he proves himself enough for another team to sign him next offseason and net us some sort of comp pick. Then Corall gets a year to learn the system and he gets his oppurtunity, or if Darnold is really poo again we draft a rookie next draft and have a QB competition.

My premise is that Sam sucks. The rest is just fodder.

I honestly think it was just the NFL getting film on him in this offense. Once they got the limited offense dialed in and could take away his first read, Sam was cooked. People are knocking Brady and he got scapegoated but our offense changed dramatically going from Teddy to Sam. Teddy was limited in his ability to physically deliver but Sam was limited on his ability to mentally process. The latter proved even more limiting to the overall offense than the former. We were basically running a high school offense last year because it's all Sam could grasp.

How can people buy into this myth? Go back and watch Darnold. A lot of his worst play comes when he has good protection and time to survey the field. He plays well when his first read is open or when he's forced to dump it off to his checkdown due to immediate pressure. Sam with time to survey the field against decent coverage is usually a recipe for disaster. Better protection isn't going to fix his issues. He just doesn't see the field like a QB needs to.

His best protection was the first three games and is supported by the OL injury history during last season and OL stats support it.    His best production was during those games.  Some say it is because the Jets and Houston sucked and the aints were depleted, on the road and had covid.

ok

I guess we'll see. At this point, it looks like Sam is going to start the year.   According to you, we should see a shltty Sam the moment we play a difficult team regardless of the OL state.

Teddy had 2 years in the offense before he started playing for the Panthers. The first time we saw Teddy play in this offense, Kyle Allen actually looked better, and we beat them in NO.  Teddy looked awful.   Sam had a preseason, and by the end of the season we were so depleted on the OL, were on our 13th line configuration.

Look, Sam sucks, in fact, I think Teddy is a better QB than Sam, but to say that Sam won't play better with a better line just doesn't sound right.

It doesn't sound right because you're not thinking about Darnold specifically and his specific flaws. They aren't fixed by an OL. They aren't fixable period. He isn't a QB mentally. He's a physically talented thrower of a football but he's not a QB.

Before we get all excited about our projected OL, please keep in mind that the guy making the decisions on who starts is the one that willingly started Pat Elflien and Cam Erving for most of last season.

I know he has more football knowledgeable people in the building now but he may not listen to them. We hope he does, but that remains to be seen.

The huddle has predicted that micromanager Rhule will

1) F up the new coach selections.  No good coaches will want to come here.
2) Ignore the new coaches OR ignore Fitt during the draft.  Our draft is going to suck because we don't have a 2nd or 3rd.

Instead...
We have NFL experienced coaches who have shown success in their very positions.
We have an LT picked at 6, the very FIRST offensive player off the board.
We have the QB that our new OC wanted.
We have highly rated linemen in Bozeman and Corbett.

Now it is possible that the prediction is true that Rhule will play Erving or Elflien over Ikem, Corbet or Bozeman, but I doubt it.

In fact I'll bet you avatar for avatar that outside of injury, Ikem, Corbet, Bozeman and Taylor are in the starting lineup day 1.

I guess we'll see, unless Corral  decimates him in camp, or we pull the trigger on a vet.

    • We all remember 2023, when the Teppers were making the Pro Day rounds.  Then last year, the owner of this restaurant, blocks from Bank of America stadium, sent a message that was received by the Panthers' owner. 😡😠🤬 https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/panthers-owner-david-tepper-makes-news-once-again-on-day-1-of-nfl-draft Why would an owner of a restaurant put up a sign of this nature?  Flashback to the Tepper Pro Day tour.  Brace yourselves: THE PRO DAY CIRCUIT,  2023  "THE HORROR." That is Nicole Tepper, all up in the prospect evaluation process with some motherly love and awkward post-hug expressions.  I was like, "What is she doing there?" Here is the lovely owner of the Panthers on the front row among scouts and our head coach at Ohio State's pro day in 2023. MODERN DAY:  APRIL 2025 So, have David and Nicole realized that ownership in the NFL does not make you an evaluator of talent?   Will their egos allow them to let others do their jobs?  Or should we brace ourselves to see their thrones moved to the war room on April 24, preparing for their draft day interventions?  Have they been on the pro day circuit?  Have we tarnished his desktop brass balls?  Did the bartender hurt his feelings?  Did he get the message?  Just because we don't see them, it does not mean they are not there--lurking in the shadows--hugging people and talking to coaches.  Texting stuff. "Dan, take who you want, but that Offensive Guard from Guilford is my third cousin twice removed."   We need to be diligent.  Stay focused.  Keep them away from the brain trust.  Seriously, did they get the message?  What have you heard?  Are we safe? Recently, GM Dan Morgan was asked if the Teppers were involved in the private workouts at BOA.  Morgan refused to answer, but he did stare at the reporter for 43 seconds.  This photo shows Morgan being asked about the Teppers' involvement during a recent presser: According to inside sources, a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, made famous by Morgan during his playing days, was recently seen being delivered to Morgan's office shortly after meeting with the Teppers, a meeting that included a power point featuring the Teppers' top 50 prospect list.  Please post any Tepper-related news here.  Hoping there is not any.
    • TJ Watt is stirring up social media with throwin up a ✌️. Sounds like he either wants out or knows he is out.  So. question is, if the Steelers come calling and offer 21 and TJ Watt for 8, are you biting?
