Looking back would you rather have Watson and a vet LT or Icky/Corral

Recommended Posts

Financially we are in the best spot possible  going forward. A franchise lt and possible  franchise Qb on rookie contracts, allows us to maneuver way better going forward.   The new TV deals are supposed to make the cap go up, so give me the rookies.

But just being a top 5 qb doesn't make you a SB contender. Salary cap can negate a lot of the advantages you get. Add in a vet LT and you're likely looking at 55m per year of cap space vs 6m. That's a lot of other places to improve the team. Corral could end up being good as well, just at a much lower price tag, for now. And Watson's career could be over on a bad hit or more legal BS. It's not just about managing talent on the field, you have to manage the whole picture.

I agree, but the question was Watson and a vet LT or Icky/Corral.

Give me the Icky and Corral.

Is Watson a better QB right now?  Based on what we know, absolutely.  But his cost in terms of a trade and salary cap was too rich for our blood right now and into the future.  I don't think Corral is Watson, but I am also not sure if Watson will be Watson moving forward, either.

Would a veteran LT be better than Icky?  Who knows?  Given our history acquiring veteran OL, Icky is at least as good a bet or better than a vet.  Teams do not let LTs go that are serviceable to great unless they have the replacement waiting to step in, and that is pretty rare.  Dominant LTs are about as rare as dominant QBs, so there is a lot of fool's gold in FA.

All signs point back to the two picks.

Minus the very significant off-field issues with Watson, Watson by miles. Elite QBs are few and far between.

That's the rub though...and the compensation that Houston was requiring, and his salary requirements on top of that.

I don't really care about the comparison.  Corral is a complete unknown, while Watson is a very good and proven NFL qb.  All things being equal, I would rather have Watson regardless of the cost.

But the off the field issues with Watson are a huge problem even if he isn't going to get punished as a criminal.  If even half of the stories are true, there is a decent chance it will happen again.  So in the end, I am glad Watson is not coming here.  If Corral works out, so be it.

Besides the draft capital it would cost us. The annual salary we would have had to pay for Watson and a vet LT we would have put us in a situation where we would not have been able to keep some of our players and sign any decent free agents.

While Icky and Corral are basic unknowns I believe we got what we wanted from this draft and will watch Cleveland struggle to keep talented players around Watson.

Watson the QB would be great.

Watson the cap eater, not so great.

Watson the draft pick eater, not so great.

The wife was abused as a kid. No way I could look her in the eye and tell her my Panther QB is a sexual predator.

Agreed.  And I hate saying that, as I always thought Watson to be a really good dude.

Dated a young lady once who had been abused, opened my eyes to that evil.

    • Easily. To be able to plug in a backup LT without much drop off from your starter? That could mean the difference between playoffs or sitting at home in January. Good/serviceable smart young and healthy LTs that won’t lose you a ball game at reasonable $$ don’t just come along every day. Everyone talks about the most important positions on a football team… backup LT is in the top 10.  Picture next year… the team is scrappy and competitive, 4 and 3 record, second place in the South. Morale is good. devastating run game that Let’s our marginal defense get plenty of rest. We play the Bucs and win, going to 5 and 3, but we lose Ickey to a high ankle sprain. Atl loses that week and are now at 5 and 3 as well. There is no Ickey and no BC because we let him go… and we go in to Atl the next week for a battle of first in the south. Week after that is the Jets…. Now they lose both by 10 and 3, respectively, and fall to 5 and 5 going in to their bye week. Atl is at 7 and 3. Out of typical Panthers desperation, they try to rush Ickey back in to the lineup with a saints game coming up…  Back to good old Panthers football, always playing catchup. Another season at .500 and the fans sadly rejoice in mediocrity, when playoffs were in reach. This team always overestimates its ability to pick up quality o line depth in the draft or FA and it always blows up in their faces. Like Chuba, I see him as being part of the core that Dan is trying to build. Work on his contract now and see if we can come out with something mutually beneficial. I’d consider 3 yrs at $25m to be very fair.
    • it would be great to have "double trouble" again, I even had a T- shirt for Williams and Stewart and the double trouble logo, was a great time to be Panthers fan. We shall see...
    • Sounds like a plan. Those are the teams we should be mimicking! lol
