What if Rhule turns out to be a really good just being a coach?

It's a pivotal year for Rhule, who likely wouldn't survive another season of struggles.

But he insisted he's not worried about his job status or the pressure of needing to win big.

{ "I've said it to you guys all along; if I make this about me, then I'm not the coach I say I am, don't believe in what I believe in," Rhule said at the NFL Scouting Combine, via the team's official website. }

{"I'm trying to get the Combine done as well as possible. If you're a coach in the league and you don't feel the pressure to win every year, if you don't feel like, 'I've got to improve the team,' then what kind of coach are you? I want to make the team better." }

{ "And I want the fans to have something. It's been a while since we've had a team that's better than what we are right now. The only pressure I feel is to be really really good for our players, for our coaches, for our fans. So I think we've done the staff right, now we'll do the Combine right. Free agency, we've re-signed a couple of our own players. Now we'll continue to do that. Be active as much as can in the free-agent market, and hopefully have a good draft." }

He was just on "stage" at the Kenny Chesney concert last week🤘.

The guy can't even take his kid to a Hornets game because crude & rude Panthers "fans" are too immature to control themselves...

...why would Rhule ever speak or appear publicly any more than the bare minimum as mandated by the NFL?

Nothing has changed... 🤦‍♂️

Matt Rhule took a 60 million dollar gig and chose to be a public figure.  Getting booed on the jumbotron is something he willingly signed up for.

Pretty clear that these types of comments refer to speaking/appearing in his professional capacity as a representative of the Panthers, as he did many times in prior offseasons but as Fitterer has done near-exclusively this offseason. Rhule sure had no problem with it previously.

And Kenny Chesney... lolz.

Which is kind of why a "flipside" sort of question applies...

What happens if the seasoned NFL assistants come to understand they're serving under someone who's not as smart as they are?

There is a saying that says that a successful leader is not successful because they are the smartest person in the room, but are smart enough to hire the people that are.

Yes that explains why Rhule hasn't been successful.

One Athletic source said he micromanages “everything that touches football”

Being "booed on the jumbotron" isn't the issue...

...that said, it's a 2-way street...

...other than very limited specific NFL mandates Coach Rhule has no obligation to appear and speak publicly just to appease the whiny masses...

...so if you want to scream profanities in public about Coach Rhule go ahead 🤦‍♂️...

...but set your expectations to exactly zero for him to make any voluntary public appearances/comments 👍.

Yeah, things change.

Act like a POS you can expect it...

I mean WTF do you expect?

That may not be as hard to find as you think.

But assuming the premise is true, I'd point out that you'd also have a hard time finding anyone who would say a bad thing about Marty Hurney.

Would you want him back as GM?

("nice guy" doesn't necessarily equal "good at their job")

Fair point.

Matt Rhule isn't in hiding because people are mean to him.  He is in hiding the Panthers have been a mess and Matt Rhule consistently has made himself and the Panther look bad when he talks about the mess.  It's PR move.   And frankly the right one if you are the Panthers.  But it highlights some problems that it became the right move.

The scouts/GM are elite. The defense is elite. I think the DC is elite. The skill players are elite. I think the OL will be elite.

If all that was elite, the Panthers would have had a winning season instead of winning just 5 games. If the scouts/GM were elite, the they would have picked all starters and quality backups last draft instead of a bunch of guys that could barely get playing time. If the defense and DC were elite, they would have been able to at least stop the run instead of being run over like a door mat. If the skill players were elite, they would have scored more touchdowns and not dropped so many balls. The OL is a work in progress and it remains to be seen what will happen there. That said, the OL gives fans a better reason to hope than it has in years.
