The one thing that is nagging at me about our QB pick...

How the fug Did Baily Zappe get drafted before Howell?? I just looked that up and I'm flabbergasted and confused..

Seriously Howell was drunk  high and grabbing dudes wives in his team interviews..

Teams were evidently turned off by his very laid back attitude. They want rah rah cheerleader types.

Belichick has low key been a horrific drafter.

I was a 1a Howell 2b Corral guy (definitely above Pickett and above Willis based on value of where I thought we’d be able to get them, wanted none at 6). But Corral was steadily rising in my estimation and Howell was static, the more I saw of Corral the more I was leaning toward him. So many NFL traits you don’t always see in the highly ranked guys. Really his only knocks are size and perceived durability based on size and play style, in my opinion. His deep ball isn’t his strength, but it’ll be the best we’ve had since healthy Cam. Sam had the arm but Corral is more accurate, and that’s largely based on decision making and timing rather than actual ability to put the ball exactly where he wants. Corral forced some deep shots trying to be a hero occasionally, but he was still more calculating and smart on deep shots than Skittish Darnold.

Honestly if you take out the size concern and the fear of injury and just focus on what he does on the field, I’d put him right up there with Zach Wilson last year and I was a big Wilson fan. Wilson did some things better, but Corral has some things he does better too. That release can’t be overstated. Something like that helps avoid batted and tipped passes as well as giving defenders less opportunity to defend the catch. He’s also really good at placing the ball to protect his receivers, something they highlighted numerous times in that Waltman video posted today. Of course, the size and injury concerns have to be considered, hence we got him in the third.

Corral has put on 7 pounds since last season/whenever he weighed in last year and is 212. Currently exact same measurements as Lamar Jackson, who is not as big as people assume. Obviously don't want him to run as much as Lamar does but I think he'll be alright, he didn't have to spend all offseason training for the combine and all that poo so probably just focused on bulking up a little.

Accurate dink and dunk passes set up the deep ball. Not vice versa. Don’t let the long bomb highlights make you think otherwise.

We got who we wanted and that leaves 0 excuses heading into the year. That alone makes me happy.

I know.  My point was the dink and dunk is meaningless if you have zero ability to throw an accurate deep ball and the defense knows this, which has been our problem for almost 5 years now.  There's no point and baiting them down if you can't beat them over the top when the chance presents itself.  Having the threat keeps defenses honest, and we haven't been able to do that.

Counterpoint: we didn’t have a deep ball threat with bridgewater because he literally could not throw the ball further than 15 yards with his noodle arm and glove. Darnold didn’t have a deep ball because he was scared of getting his head taken off before the wife receivers could even get 15 yards down the field.

hopefully both of those issues are fixed with our new OL and QB

I'm not worried about the OL and QB so much as those wife receivers. If we got some actual NFL receivers instead of the player's wives, I'm assuming, we may actually develop a passing attack on this team.

We've had this discussion about numerous players over the years, but same height and weight doesn't always translate when it comes to durability for various reasons...  but Lamar's build looks a lot more durable than Corral's.  They might weigh the same, but they wear it a lot differently...  also, even though Corral is no doubt athletic, he isn't the slippery, jitterbug fast type of elusive that Lamar is that helps him avoid a lot of big hits.  Corral's slighter frame is and was my biggest concern about him since I first watched him in college, the deep ball stuff is secondary.  If his stature measurements weren't official, I wouldn't believe them.

Corral has the arm, just not the accuracy. but to be clear, its not like he's Wild Thing throwing missiles ten yards away from target. Its just something he needs to clean up and he should be able to do that. Howell has the better long ball to be sure, but Corral does everything else better.

A good OC can develop a playbook and scheme that works around the QBs strengths and weaknesses. A good OC is what we have now. I'm not worried. in fact I'm getting excited to see what MacAdoo has in mind for MC.

The only thing I'm worried about is Rhule's level of control over the decision making process of who starts when.

And for the unlearned.... Wild Thing =

But I'm NGL, and again, as an alum, I have vested interest in the Heels' success, but I can see that...  I dont think having a laid back attitude in interviews should have much, if any bearing on how I feel about a prospect, and likely has little to do with their on-field disposition...  but, watching him in 2020, it wasn't evident because they were having success and didn't encounter much adversity.  But, watching last season, I was bothered by his lack of fire at times.  His leadership did not show up in games, IMO.  He seemed very passive...  now, there are guys that can win that way - leading with their play rather than their voice, but when you watch Corral, his leadership immediately jumps off the screen and he is fiery.  It feels like guys would take a bullet for him, and he would do the same for them.  It makes a difference, imo.

After Teddy and Sams laid back attitudes, and getting a little glimpse of Cams leadership in real life, I can see how they're over those kinda guys.

If we are talking 40 yard bombs consistently, I don't think those are integral to an offense. Throwing 20-25 yard passes accurately with DE's bearing down on you is.  If Corral can do that, then he should be fine.  The deeper stuff only needs to be on occasion and I think Corral is decent at that.

I'd like to read other teams' forums to see their thoughts on Howell and Corral and get away from North Carolina feels.

That said, as for Zappe, I'd imagine you don't draft a guy (Howell) that MAY be just as good as your starter if you have faith in your starter. You draft a solid back up, which is what they think Zappe is.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
