Opinions on Corrals game

A few things I'm thinking about Corral.

In the post-round presser after drafting Corral, Rhule answered a question at the end talking about how Ole Miss teammates talked about what a good leader Corral is and how much they liked playing for him.

I think this will factor into the dynamics of the QB position this year, I do not believe Sam Darnold is much of a leader that teammates rally around. He's just a quieter, straight edge guy, and that's okay. But unfortunately, he's also not an NFL starting QB in my opinion, and those two things combined will have him on a short leash.

I do buy into the Corral leadership factor, read some good things about him (and bad) but I think ultimately he's a guy who's vulnerable with his teammates and plays hard as hell for them. You have got to respect his decision to play in the bowl game for his school and risking injury which unfortunately for him (not Carolina!) that's what happened.

However, with no QB veteran in the room, who the hell is he going to learn from as he adjusts to NFL lifestyle? I do not think Darnold is the right guy for that, I think it's pretty important we do NOT pick up another QB arm for competition, but rather a clipboard holder who will guide the QB room in the right direction. No, I don't think the answer to that is Cam.

By nature of how the team is structured right now, Sam will be getting the #1 reps most of camp I presume, if this happens and then he gets hurt or plays so bad that Corral is swapped in, I'll be worried about how quickly he adjusts and his confidence. I do not really trust this coaching staff in that respect, there's going to be so much responsibility on Ben McAdoo's shoulders, thank god he's an NFL vet and should be able to handle these things at his level.

I'm excited though, we haven't had an exciting rookie QB since Cam I'd say so I'm looking forward to seeing how this all plays out. Very happy that we have what I'm hoping will be an at least middle of the pack NFL offensive line for the first time in years and some weapons to surround the QB position with.

    • heck yes! With the Sanders/Dowdle trade and Mingo, Morgan has already screwed the cowboys so much that our marketing team is working on a video called "Danny Does Dallas"!
    • If that’s how the first 7 go then they’re taking McMillan at 8
    • Another reason for my liking Membou, besides the fact that Moton's knee is suspect (did not play the entire season last year), he is getting old, and he will be on the last year of his contract:  The QB market is loaded next year.  Not only does drafting Membou make you younger and saves about $24m per year in RT expenses (in 2026), it would give you a solid line should we have to replace Bryce.  Young had nine nice games, but if he requires a $100m OL to be productive and will ask for $60m, that is more than half the cap at 6 positions--not including TE, WR, and RB.  Yikes. So we will not be able to re-sign Moton regardless; we will extend Ekwonu and probably give him $35m per.  But lets say Bryce does not show us enough in 2025 to give us confidence moving forward.  If you draft the RT NOW, you have a solid OL for a new QB to play behind.  Note how the other teams like New England have been scrounging around for a T--if you don't get one early in the draft, you don't get one.  Is Christensen (on a 1-year deal) the answer?  He will want vet starting money and he'd be a downgrade. We'd have to choose between drafting a QB in the best QB draft in history or drafting the RT.  Of course, we take the QB and have a glaring need at RT.  This might get that QB injured. Even if Bryce works out, we still need to cut our OL costs in half.   So looking beyond 2025, I see the value in taking the less glamourous best player available.  We know we are losing Moton--if his knee gives out before 2026, we'd have depth.  If it does not, we have options, such as trade Moton to a team with a desperate need at T.
