How did we pick-up Sam's fifth year option when we knew we wanted Watson AND theres the franchise tag?

If Darnold would have worked out, he'd have been cheaper and waaaaaay less problematic than Watson.

They wanted Watson when Teddy was here. It's was always Watson regardless of who they had to settle for.  They signed Darnold's option just in case he turned it around and it would be cheaper as Fitterer said, yes. But it did not and would not have stopped them from going after Watson. Sam would have been traded the second the deal was done with Watson had it gone that way.

It was always a dumb move to pick up that 5th year, and many on here were saying that then. 
 

Team just keeps making dumb move after dumb move, and I expect it to continue tonight.
