Why the Panthers should take a QB (article)

The QB would just be Clausen'd or Rosen'd next year. Rhule can't win in the NFL, he sucks. I wanted to draft Fields last years draft, and move up for Herbert the year prior but the rookie QB ship has sailed for this regime. They don't know what they are doing and it's just best to suffer through 2022 and start fresh with Shane Steichan and a rookie with a promising blind side.

Not first but certainly top ten with a high probability of a top 5 pick.

There is no way to know that. We are picking 6 now and 8 the year prior. If we draft a LT along with our FA OL and still get a higher pick the following year it tells me that OL isn’t as important as people think, but I don’t think that’s the case.

There is a such thing as a franchise LT. You just don't hear about them because they aren't throwing for 400 yards and 3 TDs a game. If they're doing their job, you rarely hear their name at all. You have to protect your QB, period. Good LTs rarely become available in their prime for a reason.

This year is a bit challenging for this team in the draft. With no day 2 picks, there's no chance to get a QB that may slide into round 2. So we can either take a QB, and wait 3 years for him to develop unless he's just horrid like Rosen, or we get a LT that can keep our QB (whoever that may be) on his feet. We had a franchise QB, we didn't protect him and he was physically beaten and battered trying to carry the team because we couldn't block for him and now he's virtually out of the NFL.

This year's QB crop has flaws, as does every class. Is there one of those QBs that you see as a franchise QB? Is there one of those guys you would be willing to put your job on the line for, because that's the reality for Fitts, Rhule and McAdoo. I don't the that guy this year. I see potential, but I don't see one that's head and shoulders above the rest. I do see some elite level talent at OT and that's where I would lean if I were picking.

Wow… I had never considered it in this light before. So QBs are like spinning rims and hog mollies are like engines. If only I had known.

the insult to my intelligence aside-no, there is no such thing as a franchise left tackle. I am aware of what good LT play looks like, and what bad LT play looks like, and the maximum contribution it can make to a team. I don’t need to hear the announcer say a name to comprehend it, thanks.

now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, the panthers lack of a second round pick is a moot point because you wouldn’t be taking a QB there anyways.

you don’t wait around to find a guy there-you take the highest rated guy as soon as possible-bypassing ancillary positions to do this.

Good left tackles can be found in free agency every offseason, and there’s no substantial benefit to getting them in their prime-a good rental at the position of a decent veteran player is going to add as many wins to your win total as a major financial commitment to a player coming off a rookie contract into his first deal-there is no added significance to returning a player at this position yearly. Outside the confines of free agency, we will be having this exact discussion next offseason about the four or five “generational” tackles that will be available then in the draft as well. The panthers will almost certainly not, however, have their pick of the QBs. The former is an annual occurrence, the latter is rare and very difficult to come by.

If you look at the data then its easy to see the odds are high that we will be in the top 10.  Rhule is going the wrong way, Darnolds history shows its top ten, add the schedule to the mix and its quite easy to see.

I will ask you this.  As we sit today, do you see Rhule and Darnold winning 7 games next year?   Vegas has us at 6.

What?? Good LT can always be found in FA??

Do you really believe that??

The Panthers signed one of the top two Offensive linemen in Corbett and Bozeman. IF the Panthers select, let's say Cross as OT with pick 6, AND Mcaffrey plays most of the season, do you really think the Panthers will be worse? Jaycee Horn will be back also. I would also bet sometime after the first round the Panthers sign Mayfield or Garrapalo. I don't see Rhule rolling out Darnold again. I highly doubt that team wins less than 5 games next year. Plus, multiple teams are already stockpiling 1st rounders next year. We aren't going to be in the position to take one of the top 2 QB's next year.

What's to stop them from trading future 1st's to move up next season?

There's infinite ways to get in the top 3 if they want to, ask SF.

of course. now to be clear, when I say good, I’m not talking about the ALL PRO TALENT that many here fixate on as a necessary component of a Championship roster, and the reasoning is simple: it isn’t necessary.

the disparity in wins between a capable veteran tackle signed on a one year deal each offseason is going to win me as many games as the Joe Thomas types that so many are fixated on having.

i don’t need that kind of player on my roster (as Joe Thomas proved.)

what I need at that position is good enough.

That quote alone should disqualify anything else he ever posts.  I mean it was pretty shitty up until then but that really takes the cake

I'm trying to rack my brain when the last Good LT was available in FA instead of teams having to trade 1st round picks for them..

Michael Oher maybe??

And still he wasn't good and we only got 1 year of solid play out of him...

Usually LT like Cam Eriving are available not a good LT...
