Say we roll with Darnold

In Darnold's defense I do think he would be marginally better if given more protection.  I dont think it would be a cure all though.  Those aren't ghosts he is seeing.  Those are demons and Rhule aint a priest.

I know people don't want to hear it but Sam can actually look like a competent NFL QB with good protection and a healthy CMC to dump the ball off to 20 times a game.  Not a coincidence that we were winning games and Sam was playing very well when we had a healthy CMC.

What do we do if Sam has a good year?  What if McAdoo gets out of him what Brady couldn't?

I'd suspect we'd find a way to bring Sam back on a deal that has lots of "outs". Something like the Jimmy G deal where it's really year-to-year. Worst case we'd just tag him as others have said.

That puts his cap hit in the $25M-$30M range for 1 season.

It's not gonna happen. These guys are desperately trying to save their jobs and they know damn well that Sam Darnold ain't gonna do it.

the problem (or opportunity?) is this is the brain trust that picked and paid Bridgewater and Darnold and keeps PJ around.

If Rhule has his fingers in this... how good could the selection actually be?

I don’t think that point gets made enough around here.

Sam’s anticipation on timing routes wasn’t good, but it probably didn’t matter after we beat Houston. Everyone knew our route tree as well as we did.

Man-child joe brady liked our route tree so much he just ran the same one over and over.

What's the difference between "desperately trying to save their jobs" and "trying to win NFL games"?

Asking for a friend.

Drafting a QB and developing him over the next year or two to be your guy for the next 10.

Vs.

Needing to win this season, no matter what, or you lose your job...possibly mid season.

It was a silly question.  Winning more games results in job security.  "Desperately trying to save their jobs" has a negative supposition that he is on the hot seat, which we do not actually know.  If Tepper gave him an ultimatum, he did tell us about it, and is not consistent with a 7-year contract.

When he was hired, he said it would take 5 years to establish the culture/program, but would lead to long-term success (like Pittsburg, New England, etc.).

If he was given an ultimatum and decided to mortgage the future, he could have sent multiple firsts for Russell Wilson, or sent our first rounder to Atlanta for Matt Ryan.  All are clear upgrades to what we have, but would have been short-term temporary solutions at best.  Point is, he's really not acting that desperate.

He's had plenty of time to offer 3 firsts for Kyler Murray if he's "just trying to save his job".

Just to be clear, I'm not a Rhule fan and believe we can do better.  I'd love a new coach after next year.  But he's not acting desperate.  I'm seeing modest overall roster improvement each year.  Whether it results in more wins is still unknown.  We'll see.

Dude...he's on the hotseat...I'm not sure how that can possibly be debated, if he's not been told playoffs or fired...then Tepper is worse than I imagined.

And that saying a lot.

He's definitely on the hot seat in huddle world.  Not sure about outside the bubble.

Is Rhule not being able to hemorrhage more future picks a function of him not being on the hot seat or Tepper playing damage control preventing Rhule from doing so?

There is still the draft coming up so lots of time to see what happens.
