Bruh the best qbs in the league only a couple have been the first pick

We're not talking about the best QBs in the league. We're talking about prospects. Not all the best QBs were the best prospects which has been my point about this year's QB class all along. No, there's no Andrew Luck or Trevor Lawrence type prospect but that honestly doesn't matter. The Huddle is only interested in those Luck and Lawrence type prospects though and you only find those guys at #1 overall and they only come around about once a decade, so best of luck landing that guy.

Luck never made it to the Super bowl.

Newton made it once, but lost and never came close to making it back.

Joe Burrow's done the first part of that. Waiting to see whether he also does the second (given that he plays for the Bengals, it's very possible).

Kyler Murray made it to the playoffs and looked in over his head.

Baker Mayfield is in the process of flaming out, while the guy that was taken six picks below him is looking...pretty good.

Jared Goff's team replaced him. Heck, so did Carson Wentz's. You could technically be impressed by how far Goff and Wentz have fallen but Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota can say they did it first.

Sam Bradford...enough said. Ditto Jamarcus Russell and Alex Smith (bet the 49ers are sure glad they bet on him over that Rodgers guy that went 20 picks or so later).

And back to today, Trevor Lawrence...well, he plays for the Jaguars. Maybe Doug Pederson can make a difference but for now they're still the Jaguars.

Turns out you've gotta go all the way back to 2009 to find a quarterback chosen #1 overall who's actually won a Super Bowl (Matt Stafford) and even he just did it this year. To top it all off, he wasn't even with the team that originally took him when he did.

If you want a quarterback who actually lived up to the hype and netted his original team a trophy then you have to trace even further back to 2004 with Eli Manning. Eli did it twice. Outside of Stafford, no QB taken first overall since Manning has even done it once.

Wow 😳

Seems like that whole "get the top overall pick and start winning" strategy isn't the guaranteed path to a Lombardi trophy that some seem to think it is.

Why is it so hard?

Probably because the vast majority of the time, the team picking #1 overall didn't just have a bad luck season. They tend to be longtime sh-tty teams, and even getting that magical unicorn quarterback doesn't fix the sh-ttiness that runs throughout the rest of the organization.

So maybe...just maybe...the more reliable path to winning it all is to build a quality team around a good to great quarterback, even if he's not that super magical unicorn that everybody thinks the #1 pick is.

But hey, if you still want to go that route, cool. I mean after all, it's not like we're one of those sh-tty organizations that takes turns playing this game on an annual basis.

Right? 🤔

Contract wise, a Wilson, Brees, Brady contract would really boost a franchise. That Joe Burrow contract will easily become a burden if he's great or not. He's demanding x amount because he's a 1st rounder performing like a top pick, what do you have left for the rest of the roster?

You get a first round talent in the second or third you can actually have the resources to build a team around that guy and create a "dynasty"

That's probably why Tepper blinked when it came time for Cams contract as a bonafide top pick.

Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, Tom Brady were not top ten or top twenty.

You do your homework you can find diamonds in the rough like Carson Strong.

You think those guys (the first three specifically) don't go higher today? The QB position is more vital than ever and height is no longer the huge knock against a QB prospect that it used to be. As a prospect, I still doubt Brady would go in the 1st due to questions about his physical tools but he also wouldn't have been playing in a leather football helmet offense that limited his stats either.

I think you're completely mischaracterizing my argument here. What I'm saying is that the type of QB prospect the Huddle wants and always acts like is going to be available for us "next year" is a once in a decade type prospect that goes #1 overall.

My point is that you don't have to have that guy and your odds of landing that guy are hear zero so stop being hung up on it.

Look again.

I actually just showed how valid your argument was.

I find this rather interesting and is definitely a conversation starter:

His rankings:

4. Kenny Pickett

Doesn't have pop-out of the film talent.  He can create but doesn't have throws that show he can create a playoff type run.  Last year's improvement is notable, but he had great perimeter talent in a bad conference.  I.E. Pitt-UNC game that he barely won.  Just doesn't show that extra bit you see in top draft talent.

Have no idea if Pickett will be a good NFL qb, but I definitely don't agree with this.  Pitt's perimeter talent was certainly not great.  IMO,  both Wake and Clemson had more talent in that regard.

I was trying my best to transcribe and provide some extra commentary.  Don't know a ton about Wayne, but that offense seemed to go through Addison.  Kind of reminds me of Bateman when he was in Minny.

There is so much information and disinformation around Qbs all the way up to the draft. Look how much people like agents stand to make.

Different schools have bigger followings than others so Jimmy Clausen is the next best QB ever.

Then you have issues when you're trying to translate from a player from a large program large conference university vs small conference whiz kids.

All of that noise can distract the best scouts, professionals, and fans. When you get in a quiet place. Look at the numbers, look for consistency, look for statistical outliers, look for positive measurables, elite performance, elite arm, high IQ, classroom/playbook scholarship, fearlessness in the pocket, the numbers and traits above apply to Carson Strong not Kenny one year wonder Pickett.

Strong 2022!

    • The agenda was building around Bryce.  2 WR, 3 olinemen, TE, and a potentially elite RB.  I stood up for Bryce all last year because I didn't think you could evaluate him properly with what we had last year in coaching, play calling and personal.  Bryce was the 2nd least pressured QB in the last 2 weeks because of the money Morgan spent on the line.  Despite Bryce looking horrible I'd say Morgan has had an exceptional beginning as GM. Here some more things I liked. Trevin Wallace looked like a banger in preseason.  Resigned Brown.  Gave Horn his 5th year option and Horn is playing very well. *Flipped a 7th round pick for a starting CB in Michael Jackson who has also played well. Filled a depleted roster with solid vets and if you really look at the cap this is a 2 year play.  Almost everyone except the 2 elite guards signed a 2 year deal. Did not pay Stephen Gilmore 10 million for one season. *Got the 0-2 Rams 2nd pick next year. Set a culture and tone of the type of players we want.  *Dawgs. *Elite GM moves.
