Jeremy Fowler: Panthers have done their due diligence on QB Jimmy Garoppolo

Garoppolo is a very sexy man therefore I think we should acquire him

The man is a real difference maker -- if signed he will lift this franchise up in a way...

..."here it goes, the circular motion, now rub"...

Garoppolo is not my pick to be the starter for the Panthers, but he is not as bad as people make him out to be.

The 49ers were 31-14 with Jimmy G. If you were to remove Jimmy G's game winning drives, the 49ers would have been 22-23. That is a significant impact. If Mayfield were the QB over this period of time for the 49ers, I would project the 49ers to have a 28-16 record not go to SB 54, not beat the Rams to get into the playoffs, and not beat the Packers to get to the NFC Championship.

Garoppolo converts 42% of his teams possible losses into wins. In comparison, Mayfield comes in at 19%, Watson comes in at 28%, Stafford comes in at 30%, Brady comes in at 42%, and Mahomes comes in at 43%. This is a measure of how effective a QB is at winning a game when the defense can't carry the game and the offense/coaching has failed to execute going into the 4th quarter.

From a Panthers perspective, Cam Newton is 22%, Jake Delhomme was 38%, and Sam Darnold is 11%.

Without diving into the complete model I use to measure a QB, this is the statistical foundation of what defines a successful QB in the NFL.

I will say this Garoppolo > Newton > Mayfield > Darnold. I project 3 QBs from the draft to be as good or better than Garoppolo. I believe none of those 3 QBs will be taken in the 1st round.

Go look at his playoff stats and get back to me. He sucks. He's been on some damn good teams.

Come on man, they beat 2 division champions on the road and lost by a FG to the eventual SB Champion. He wasn’t Brady, but damn the man deserves a little credit.

Did he light up the box score? Absolutely not, but he wasn’t awful either. The 49ers offense isn’t anything to write home about and will struggle with Lance starting next year.

I'm sorry, but did you watch the games? I think awful is a pretty fair description of his play.

They beat GB 13-10 with 11/19 passing for 131 yards 0 TDs and 1 INT...  They scored off a blocked punt and 2 FGs.  You think that was Jimmy G? The game before at Dallas 16/25 172 yards 0 TDs and 1 INT.  Debo and Mitchell were able to run it in for him plus 3 FGs.  Those look very similar to Darnold numbers on a much better roster.

It's what he does. He panics and does dumb poo. That's why I honestly don't think he'd look much different than Sam Darnold if he was playing for us. Take him off of a great overall roster with a good offensive minded coach and he's probably going to look a whole lot like Sam Darnold.

I agree Jimmy G is a lateral move.  Mayfield is a step up to at least midlevel.  I'd prefer to trade down and draft one, but Mayfield for cheap at LT in the draft is a decent plan B... (assuming the eat a chunk of his salary and we give up very little)
