Throwing Hurney under the bus.

My main concern is trading away future picks to trade up. There is quality in late rounds. All of the Great drafting teams find value in all 7 rounds of the Draft. they don't need to trade up.
hurney is a bobby beathard protege. beathard was considered to be one of the best but riskiest GMs in the league. he traded away a lot of picks and helped make some very good championship teams that way. some of his risky draft day moves won him a few HoFers.

of course he is also the one that traded up to get ryan leaf...soooo...there you go.

Don't know who this is directed at, but it is obvious and has been for at least 3 yrs that we needed a solution at QB. Hurney has drafted to keep the team competitive now and keep his job but with no eye to the future. We haven't drafted a QB higher than the 4th round since our first draft(15 yrs). That is a recipe for mediocrity manifest by our good year, bad year cycle. Hurney and Fox apparently don't know QB is important. Most media say they will address it through free agency but their aren't any FA QB's worth a crap. That is why they are FA.

Isnt it ironic when someone makes a thread to point out how dumb hurney is but he himself still doesn't even know the details of the trade of draft picks he calls out hurney for.

what are you talking about? 2010 first for a 2nd and a 4th. who doesn't know that? Still wasn't a good move.

Really Peppers was. He kept us out of the FA pool and was given so much money no one player could ever live up too. Should have just let him walk. So what if we did not get anything for him if we are a better team without him dose it matter?

I disagree cause Pep > Jake

Jake played average then horrible in the playoffs. Then got the contract

Atleast Pep did something that made us feel we need to keep him. Jake has nothing to make us feel that way

So I put Jake just a little above it, cause Pep was performing before getting hurt. Jake still has lost games for us and still suck

Jakes may have been more of a disappointment but his contract is still half of what Peppers is this year..... The fact is we still dont have any rush from our line and FA could of helped that. So yea Peppers is good when he wants to be but the fact still remains we are handicapped with him and it hurts our chances of being better more then even Jake.

Which is what I am about to do. I understand all of the good moves he has made. He was very instrumental in our playoff pushes. But to give up a high draft pick in the first round for 2nd round DE is in my opinion, the worst move he could ever make. He gambled last year and won. I know I am beating a dead horse, but I felt the need to sound off because I get over what a dumb move he made. not to mention our horrible offseason. I hope the 49ers sent him a thank you card for the 7th overall pick in the 2010 draft. thats all. rant over.

where in that quote is there anything about a 4th? You specifically said a first for Brown which if you knew wasnt the case you deliberately misrepresented the situation. Whatever the case if they feel the need for a first round pick next year they have proven they can get one. In the meantime they have a solid de that may be great.

Jakes guaranteed money over the 5 years is just a small amount more than Peppers will make this year. His guaranteed money averages out to about 4 mil a year, certainly not the big bucks some people on here make it out to be especially when matt ryan signed a 6 year contract with almost 6 mil guaranteed per year as a completely unproven rookie.

Hurney has done a pretty good job over the years. For the most part we still have our dirst rounders for the past 7 or 8 years and they have played well. We also do a pretty good job maxiimizing other folks throwaways and finding gold with lower picks and undrafted guys. If were Detroit or Saint Louis and picked a bunch of duds in the first round, we could surely complain, but overall we have done well and the fact that many people feel we have good talent is directly due to Hurney. If you are going to throw Hurney under the bus they don't put in another thread you think we have good talent. Otherwise both things can't both be true.

didn't think I needed to. I follow this team just a good as everyone else. I watched the draft. I know what happened. just didn't write it.

SAVOIR FAIRE I appreciate your opinion but the bottom line is. Peppers made it so difficult to trade him WE had to keep him or release him. We just couldn't let that sort of talent go without compensation. 17m is a huge. The players we could have added to this team or been able to keep WOULD have made a difference in our team this year. Hurney and Fox have for the most part been good at finding mid-level free agents to add depth to this team. Rayzor argued my points (so good I didn't have to put my 2 cents in, Thanks Rayzor)

I will admit you are correct that we probably wouldn't have gone after Haynesworth but there were other DT's that we could have addressed. DE too. This changes our whole draft strategy. Had we had the funds to address these issue we would still have our 2010 1st round pick.

When Brown was still on the Board (see the attached article where he was projected to go in the top 10 to GB) and ONLY a junior we just got our DE a year early. I am telling you right now had Brown stayed in school he would have been the #1 DE in the draft. And some of us would be screaming to draft him in the 1st round and take a QB in the 2nd. So we got our 1st rounder a year early. He has had a year to mature on this team. Those that doubt need to look at Mario Williams in Houston and not be so damn anxious to pin bust on Brown. We will take a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round and the universe will be corrected.

So not to beat a dead horse lets just agree to disagree.

Go Panthers

BTW here is the link on Brown. (one of many) http://football.about.com/od/nflplayerprofiles/p/EveretteBrown.htm

As I said, at the time that any of the better (and none were all that) DTs were available, we had our starters set, Lewis and Kemo. We also had Brayton who had played inside Hayden (yeah I know SUx) and other DEs who were capable of multitasking. Sure another hoss of a DT would have been nice, but the rates they were getting was more than we were willing to pay and park on the bench , especially when it meant letting Peppers walk with zero compensation. The bottom line is that once you've identified your key players, and ownership has bought in to the point where they all spend a weekend at his lakehouse bonding, letting one walk and starting over is not an easy decision to make. The team didn't see options to offset the loss. It doesn't matter what we see.

You guys need to chill. You know not all good players come from the first round. Look up the HOF qbs you'll find that only about 50% of them came from the first, go around to other positions and you'll even find that number drop. It's all about spotting talent, give Brown some time to settle down. Sometimes I think you guys just think about what round their picked instead of the value of the player in relation to the round picked.

Name your top ten favorite/best players and I bet about 50% of them came from later rounds.

    • First of all Sooners fan? Mods? Second if you think someone needs a specific reason to hate Texas you don’t watch real college football.
    • 100% even if rest of team is really talented if they march young out to be qb and he plays like he has for 90% of his starts the panthers have already lost doesnt even matter how good the rest of the team is or isnt and also makes it hard to even tell how good they are.  They need true competition for young this offseason.
    • It will be awesome to have an improved stadium to lose in I guess....   https://www.yahoo.com/news/panthers-file-rezoning-bank-america-111500840.html     The Carolina Panthers have taken another necessary step toward renovating their home of the present and future. Panthers Stadium, LLC, filed its rezoning site plan with the city of Charlotte on Monday, initiating an important — if mostly technical — step toward renovating Bank of America Stadium. The filings state that the rezoning relates “primarily to technical aspects associated with improvements to Bank of America Stadium,” and that the rezoning is required because “the current stadium zoning is out of date” for the team’s stadium renovation plans.   The planned stadium updates include new seats installed throughout the upper and lower bowls; stadium safety and security enhancements; a reimagined South Lawn Pavilion; upgraded restrooms; exterior enhancements (including LED video boards) and more. Planning for the stadium renovation project will continue through 2025, with construction starting in 2026 and the renovation’s conclusion in 2029, The Observer previously reported.
