Agreed. Unless the kid shows a huge upside like Cam did, there is no reason you can’t swing again if you are picking top 5/6 again. You definitely have to consider swinging again if you’re picking #1 unless you are just that convinced with your current guy.

Yep. The Cardinals did it with Rosen. Drafted him top 10, weren't happy with him so they flipped him for a 2nd and drafted Kyler Murray #1 overall. Hell, the Jets managed to get a 2nd, 4th, and 6th for Sam fuging Darnold after he proved to be the worst starting QB in the NFL over the course of three seasons.

It’s hilarious how fuged that Darnold trade is. We literally traded a serviceable 2022 rookie QB for a busted 4 year QB from the Jets, while trying to trade down for a 2022 second round pick not half as good as the one we traded away. You couldn’t make this poo up.

I was screaming to high heavens the whole time. It was an insanely idiotic trade and then we doubled down picking up his option.

I posted the day the trade was finalized that this was the day that I realized that Matt Rhule is ultimately not gonna work out.

That has literally happened once in the history of the NFL, its certainly far from the norm.  I wouldnt count that as some strategy into building a franchise.    And like you say they had the flexibility of having the #1 pick.  I would imagine they would have had to roll with Rosen otherwise.  Teams simply dont pick a qb in the top 10 and move on after a year.

Trading a bevy of picks for the worst QB in the NFL certainly isn't the norm either. Most situations are unique.

Most teams are and will not be in the same position the Cards are in. If you there is a can’t miss franchise QB where you are in the draft ie Luck, Cam, etc. you would be dumb not to make that move. Especially if you are not 100% convinced with the guy you have.

Yep. The Jags are sitting at #1 overall again but they're not ready to give up on Lawrence yet. They're probably bummed there isn't an elite QB prospect sitting there. They could take him and flip Lawrence for a haul or trade the pick for a haul.

The Panthers drafted Clausen, and then drafted Cam a year later.

I really think qb at 6 is a smart move for rhule on the grounds it could extend his contract. Say we draft a tackle and don't make the playoffs... he's gone. If he does the same with a young future star at qb that might be enough for tepper to want to allow him to develop his young signal caller. 

Not that I don't love the top 3 tackles. I think you need a superstar to win at this level. The qb you select has to have superstar upside to duel with Mahomes now. He is the standard. I don't see that with Pickett.
