it's not like better tech doesn't exist. they're using the less accurate tech because it's good enough for it's current purpose. when you're just tracking general stats being off a few inches is fine.

still, there's tech that exists to be accurate down to a fraction of a centimeter. WAY more accurate than having a ref spot the ball. they definitely could implement this if they wanted.

i'm all for it, watching a ref just give away an extra yard and a half and a free first down is some serious BS.

yeah but it's going to be extremely costly.

You know how many footballs they have available for use in games?   Quite a bit.

Not sure if it's cost-efficient enough for the league to even consider it.

@kungfoodudehad it right : The League only does something if it positively affects their bottom line.

Ball spotting is not done by a chip in the ball.

Ball tracking optical tech like Hawk-Eye would be used to know where it should be spotted on the field.

It makes no difference what tech they use because the refs will do ref things and still manage to mark the spot short of a first down when it was a first down to begin with.

Say you didnt read the article without saying you didnt read the article.

It’s not always possible to tell precisely where the ball was when the ball carrier’s knee touched the ground, especially when huge men are surrounding the ball carrier and blocking any view of his knee or the ball.

absolute fugging bologna.
