So much angst every year about the salary cap among folks who really have little clue like all of us. We can afford whoever we want and need to keep trying to upgrade. Kicking the can happens with most all teams. We will be fine next year like we were this year. It's gotten to the point if you don't manipulate the cap you aren't really trying.

This thread is revealing.

Cut Shaq and Anderson: 25m

Restructure Moton and CMC: 15m

Meanwhile, if we draft well in the next two years, we will have 10-15 more players on nice low cost-controlled contracts (including an LT and QB).

The details are available.  Take a look.

With no long term QB that we know of worth a damn under contract...this is a shame.

Get your QB...that's first, but if there isn't one, build like hell through the draft.  Solidify the defense, O Line, and get a couple weapons while keeping your cash on the side...some powder dry.

Then, once you have your QB, you have a well built team, a QB under contract long term, and a pile of cash to plug the holes to get ready to have a playoff team.

We do the opposite.

This is what smart Nfl teams do

what have the panthers done and what are the expected to do

lol.  We know the answer

I have long stated, on this board and to folks who talk to me that at the end of the day, the Panthers have been, and continue to be, one of the dumbest teams in the NFL.

I'd bet 20% of my posts on this site have Dumb Team as the final two words.

Dumb Team.

One thing I'd say regardless of your feelings about the cap.

This narrative I see people carrying around about how we're going to have tons of cap room next year and we can just fix everything then via free agency and pay all our best players big money to stick around...

Let It go.

This isn't something that concerns me at all at this point. We did a lot of restructuring and the cap is expected to rise next season.

What bothers me is that we don't have a QB, and could use a LT as well. We have Fitt and Rhule trying to find the next QB, and neither of them have a good track record. To compound the problem the 2022 rookie QB crop doesn't have a clear standout player.

If you're worrying about the cap at this point I don't know what to say.

Fitt, Rhule and Tepper don't understand how things fell apart, can't understand they are making it worse and can only dig the hole deeper as they flail about trying to make whatever it is they are doing work.

We can get rid of two of the guys at any time and restart. We can't, however, get rid of that horse's ass that bought the team.

A lot of folks have been like "Fitt's the man, he'll get this straightened out, he's not worse than Marty was." Guess what? He's not made things better, he's gotten us into cap space hell even faster than Hurney did and has no idea what he is doing.

And Dan Morgan? Sheesh, the guy was just the fourth best middle linebacker that ever played for the team, but I don't know where everyone thinks he's going to be the guy to save the franchise behind the scenes.

What a frikkin' train wreck.

Fitterer was in Seattle when they found Wilson. He did have some culpability with Darnold but I suspect it was largely Rhule who made that decision given Fitt was pretty new at that point.

A month ago we were all thinking we wouldn't have much cap space to make any FA moves and yet we signed some good players and still have the most cap space in the NFL.

The cap can be so easily manipulated there really isn't any point in worrying about it a year in advance.

Total facts, I posted this back in January right after the season ended and had a few clowns argue that we were forever broke:

Same one's that today say we are screwed next year after learning nothing this offseason.

How are we getting 10-15 more players? We’ve got 1 pick before pick 137 this year. How many contributors do you think we’ll get this year? You know why so many of the 11 picks we had this year made the team? We were devoid of talent and depth. Sure, we could add 20 UDFAs, cut Shaq and Anderson and be absolutely fine cap wise.

No one in here is saying we can’t manage the cap but it’s delusional to think we’ll have a team to compete if we cut Shaq and add an UDFA.

We better hope our drafts starting knocking it out of the park. That’s the only way we can right this ship. We don’t have enough extra cap to really enhance this roster through FA with a bunch of 1 year deals. We aren’t the Rams or NO with Brees. We are a level or two below that.

we have 6 picks this year.  we have at least 7 picks next year.  we're not drafting anyone knowing they will not be contributors.  they are all expected to compete for a spot.  most will make the team.  Some will be backups, but I imagine we can find 2-3 starters this year.

Almost all of our starters on defense are signed for 2 or more years.  Same with the offense.  There are only a handful of 1-year deals.

And I wasn't suggesting we cut shaq.  I like shaq.  But are you telling me we can't replace him with the 13m savings cutting him would produce?  Will terrace marshall be as productive as robbie anderson allowing a savings of 12m in cap?

Its a small sample, but it looks like Fitterer is focused on getting the expensive guys in the early rounds, as opposed to the prior regime that drafted LBs and RBs early.  CBs, T's, Edges, WRs, and QBs are expensive on the open market and I think Fitterer will want to maximize his dollars by drafting these players in the first few rounds.  Last year we went CB, WR, and T in the first 3 rounds.  This year its looking like a T, QB, or Edge.  Next year will probably be QB and Edge.  We'll see.
