Evan Mathis - Remember Him?

Well first of all, if Mathis needed a grading system to tell him that he was getting his ass kicked on a weekly basis when he was a Panther, then he's about as dumb as a box of rocks.

This

Secondly, if Fox deserves any blame for Mathis, it should be for drafting him in the first place, because he was undersized and didn't really fit the mold of the big run blocking linemen that he should have been targeting all along.

No, this...

Third, if you're a back up NFL O-lineman, then you had damn well better be able to play more than one position if you want to stick around.

Wait, THIS!

Fourth, if any fan thinks that the Bengals are winning because of Evan Mathis, then they should just smack themselves in the face over and over and over and over again.

Ya think? :)

For the record, I liked Mathis and wished we would have kept him, but I understood why he was let go when he was. Some guys need new starts, and some don't get them until they're on their third team (sometimes even their fourth).

I don't really know how much blame you can throw at Fox here. The team likes versatile interior O-Linemen, and Mathis just wasn't that. Guys like Hangartner and Bernadeau are, so they stick where Mathis didn't.

And yeah, the decisions on guys like Tony Brown and Jovan Haye made sense too, given the circumstances.

For the record, I'm not happy with Fox right now and believe it's probably time for him to go. That doesn't mean I'm going to say every single move he's made has been wrong. That'd be just as wrong as saying all of them have been right.

Yeah, I too believe it's probably time for a change, but Evan Mathis has nothing to do with it. I believe that Fox's message has probably gotten stale and that this team needs more youth and energy in the coaching staff, but make no mistake...Fox still knows more about NFL football than all of us put together, and about half of the things he's being criticized for around here have nothing to do with reality. He won't be out of work long, unless he chooses to retire.

I'm betting that he wins more games than we do in his first couple of seasons with another team. And I'll give it a season and a half before 90% of the people on this board who are calling for his job right now start posting as if they were defending him and wanted him to stay in Charlotte. :)

PS. I think he's a good coach and want him to stay.

he won't be back at work as HC of a team very quickly like you think he will.

teams just aren't looking for HCs with pro level HC experience these days. the bulk of the open jobs go to the young guys on the rise. that's why you have guys like gruden, shanny, schotty, and billick out there. sure, mangini got hired quickly by the browns but look how stupid they are with everything else and how well it's turned out for them.

for those few teams who will be looking to retreads for HC jobs, not only will fox have to compete with those guys previously noted, add in that cowher and holmgren will be back in the market and fisher may very well be available again. i don't see fox being head and shoulders above any of those guys.

point is, there is just flat out too much competition for jobs coming up and i don't think he has enough fire power to land him a job in front of a lot of these guys, especially when so many teams will be looking for someone fresh.

fox is most likely to be on the radio for a year or two unless he goes in as a coordinator or the HC of a college program.

Cyber, I too think that he is a good coach, much like Marty, but sometimes it's time for a change, and I think that time is now.

I would be fine if he stays, and fine if he leaves, I am a fan of the Panthers.

As I have said many times before, I like Fox moreso than Hurney. And if they are a package deal, then it's time for both to leave, and if not, then see ya Hurney and glad to have you stay coach.

To me, this is the most concerning part:

EM: When I was with the Panthers, it was hard to know if your play was up to par with what the coaches expected on each play. There were no grades handed out and rarely did I hear if I played well or didn't. It was like studying to take a test every week, taking that test, then never knowing what grade the teacher gave you. I'm a numbers guy, give me a number and tell me to make it better. Tell me to weigh a certain weight, tell me how much to lift, how fast to run, and tell me what I need to grade. When I have those things in my sights, I can break down what it is I need to do to reach my goal.

How are you supposed to improve your performance if you're not getting any feedback? This ties in to what I've suspected the problem is: there is no accountability on this team, good or bad. Screw up and nobody says anything to you about it, do something good and nobody says anything about it, just show up and play and try to read Fox's body language to tell if he's happy with you or not. Sounds like he has the same "it is what it is" attitude with players that he does with the rest of us.
