why are people obsessed with this mentoring idea like that doesn’t happen unless a vet is on the field playing at a high level, and even then it’s rare, otherwise it’s called a qb coach

it doesn’t make sense, learn to enjoy the panthers/nfl in general

Favre didn't mentor Rodgers. Smith didn't mentor Mahomes.

Tom Brady had never mentored a player in his career.

Now you might learn some things from them by watching and prepping with them. That's real. But you aren't going to have an older QB fighting for their job try to help in that effort.

It's a cut throat business, not a charity.

I wouldn’t be totally against signing Baker for cheap if the Browns release him. I just don’t want to trade away any picks or take on his full salary. Baker with Neal/Cross at 6 would greatly improve our offense and we can get a comp for him if we let him walk next year and draft our guy.

I’d say sitting behind and collaborating on the sidelines with one of the best like you said is a form of indirect mentoring and I do believe that probably helps preparation. And again that means the rookie is sitting and he’s only sitting because the vet is still high level.

But as you said, it ends at some point (or doesn’t cause the rookie sucks or vet has more in tank ala Love) because it’s cut throat. The way it is. Like you said at some point the younger player needs to be given the reigns and older cast aside to avoid issues.

But cam isn’t going to show anything at this point on the field and people seem to confuse cam with a good qb coach and it’s really not the same. In fact I’d argue, ironically, players who played like crap but have the gift to teach work out better. Plenty of examples. It’s two different skills obviously.

The Baker hate on this board is stupid AF.

Baker Mayfield has thrown more interceptions than any QB since he has been in the league.

https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask/most-interceptions-by-a-qb-since-2018#:~:text=Since 2018%2C Baker Mayfield has,a quarterback%2C with 56 interceptions.

Mayfield was supposed to take strides in 2021. He went backwards. You may put it on injury, but he chose to play.

"Instead of a career year — or perhaps a modest regression after the league adjusted to Stefanski’s scheme and style in Cleveland — the wheels completely fell off. Mayfield ranked 27th in the NFL in QBR (35.3) in 2021 and 29th in off-target throw percentage (19 percent), according to ESPN’s Stats & Information Group; he set a career high in sacks with 43, good for 28th in the league; he was 24th in the league in yards per dropback (5.93), sandwiched between Daniel Jones and Davis Mills; he was 27th in Next Gen Stats’ completion percentage over expected (-3.5 percent); and Pro Football Focus graded him as the 27th best passer in the league (62.4 passing grade)."

https://www.google.com/amp/s/fivethirtyeight.com/features/when-should-you-break-up-with-a-quarterback-asking-for-the-cleveland-browns/amp/

Mayfield is poo--the anti-Brady--in close games during crunch time.

https://www.brownsnation.com/baker-mayfield-has-disturbing-stat-in-4th-quarter-of-close-games/

There are reasons why Mayfield is out of a job and no one is rushing to give him one. Key metrics says he's basically JAG since he's been in the NFL. His passer rating is not great, and his QBR is simply bad since he became a pro. So before you call the Baker "hate" on this board "stupid AF", you must understand the total Mayfield experience (and I didn't even get into his cringe-worthy leadership...).

I don't mind bringing Baker in, but it would have to be no more than a fourth, just like I thought for Darnold (or a third, plus Darnold). Mayfield hasn't proven to have the ability to lift up a team; he's arguably proven to drag a good team down with uninspired play.

Cam offers some great benefits as a teammate in general but this idea that he is going to come in and turn a young QB into a success are ridiculous. Cam's drive made him a success. If we need to have a guy like Cam come in and mold a new QB, they probably just aren't going to work out well anyway.

And I don't mean that Cam can't help a young QB. Not saying that at all but people really go to far with the idea and expectation.

The Cam Hate needs to stop. Cam had no line last year. He still has it plus he came in late in the season had to learn a new offense on the fly. First 2 plays when he touched the ball 2 TDs. Cam is not done in my opinion!

Calling Cam done as a starter is not hate, it's reality. I love the guy to death but his days as a full time starter in the NFL are over and he knows that, hence why he said he is okay being a backup.

I am sure that was a difficult pill to swallow but it just is what it is. He was never the same player after all those injuries.

The two who hate Cam threads are in a thread with Cam mentioned lol.

I wouldn’t mind Baker, but I’d rather start fresh. I honestly don’t even want Cam back. Don’t Baker have character concerns? Well, his old team says he’s childish and I know how a lot of folks on here hated “divas” lol

Inconsistent?  No, actually he's been pretty consistent.  He should never have played hurt this year, that was dumb.  Someone should have given him better advice.

You know what's not consistent?  The Browns head coach.  Baker played for FOUR head coaches four years.  That's not the path to success for a raw young QB, and Baker has done fairly well.

He's not a big improvement over what we have?  Did you watch Darnold?  Sam Darnold is . . . awful.  I mean, tragically bad.  Surely you don't mean PJ.

Lead the team?  The guy has 7 game winning drives in his 3.5 year career.  If he plays as long as Cam has, he'll have more than Cam.  I don't have any questions about Cam.  Nor about Baker.

The Browns are asking little because Baker has them over the barrel.  They need Baker gone in order to make moves in free agency.  Honestly, this is the main reason I don't see us getting him.  We can't afford him.  We need Sam gone in order to bring in a good QB.

QBR 51.2, 54.4, 65.5, 35.1

PR 93.7, 78.8, 95.9, 83.1

The dude is all over the place.  He is upper middle all the way down to Darnold bad.  Every QB is playing hurt.  Teddy did it, Cam did it, Sam did it, Brady did it.  If it hurts his play, then he  needed to tell somebody right away, not 5 games in.  I'd rather go with Darnold.

As for the coaching, nearly the exact same could be said for Sam.  In fact all of the excuses you gave are Sam excuses.

Baker...no, just no.

How can you judge a QB with no line it's unacceptable period. Cam has a better line now if they decide to keep him. I'm sorry but people who say Cam is done have weak football knowledge.

Agreed on Favre but disagree on Smith. Mahomes has talked numerous times about how much Alex Smith helped him out transitioning to the NFL and becoming a pro.

Baker just seems too high maintenance. If he was really good and productive, then I could probably deal with it.

He's just not worth the effort or cost of a trade. I REALLY don't want us to get him. I don't want us to trade for him or use him as a reason to not chase after another QB in the next couple years.

    • We had a problem years back with this thing going on so we banned them from taking place in the forums. What happens in DMs is different. Can't really control that but people were getting hella bent out of shape because of poo like that happening in the main forum. Just caused too much unnecessary drama.
    • They can, but Legette has had more drops than 4 IMHO. I’m assuming they aren’t labeling “tougher” catches like today’s miss as a drop. IMHO, a first round WR needs to make that catch. That’s what makes someone a top WR, making tough catches in key moments.
