Defensive end Brian Burns has become an impact player for the Panthers, which makes him someone the club wants to keep around.

To that end, General Manager Scott Fitterer said at his Friday press conference that Carolina plans to exercise Burns’ fifth-year option.

Burns was the 16th overall pick of the 2019 draft. In 17 games last season, he recorded 9.0 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, 19 quarterback hits, and a pair of forced fumbles. He was named to his first Pro Bowl.

“He’s a guy that’s come out and produced for us,” Fitterer said. “I really like the leader he’s becoming and the man he is. So he would be one of those guys that we’ll definitely try to work on.”

In 48 career games with 35 starts, Burns has 25.5 sacks, 26 TFLs, and 55 QB hits. He’s also recorded eight passes defensed and six forced fumbles.

Doesn't bother me. I think he is doing okay. Could be doing better but I think he is still developing and hasn't reached his ceiling yet. I think it's definitely worth picking up this fifth year and seeing what he has moving forward or how much further he can come along. He may not be tops in the league but he is no slouch at all currently where he is at and maybe we will see him go even further next season.

    • I want to throw in how much easier it is for a QB to develop and improve with a good oline.  Huge credit to the front office for spending the money on our two guards.  Cade Mays also had a 2nd really good game starting at center.  Love how he has developed and hope he's the real deal. Look at what Stroud is dealing with now in Houston after injuries and problems with their oline.  Strouds accuracy has been greatly affected as it seems like he doesn't trust his protection. Canales is doing a great job developing Bryce.  I think the QB whisperer might be for real. And obviously big props to Bryce.  First round pick that looks horrible in his first year.  Different coaches and systems.  Fans and media are calling him the biggest bust in NFL history and he looked like it in the first two games this year.  Gets benched.  Young man keep his cool and just continued to work and only worry about what he can control.  I hope things continue like this and we end up with a great success story. Bryce Young kept pounding.
    • Outside of Philly (who currently is #3 in pass defense) the rest of our remaining opponents are bottom 1/3 of the League in that regard.  Let's see what Bryce can do versus bad pass Ds.
