James Campen #1 signing this offseason, so far.

Recommended Posts

Everything I have read has been nothing but praise over this guy.  He seems to be one of the best O-line coaches in the league.  He has the ability to make a subpar player into something decent and a average player into something very good.  He cares about his players and knows how to get the most out of them.

Our O-line needs drastic help, obviously, and though we may bring in some more players to help.  I think he'll take what we give him and put a quality O-line on the field.  I really like Matsko but he went with Rivera to the Commies. From all I've heard he's better.

This could be our best signing this offseason.

Thoughts?

Only if he's allowed to coach and use personnel as he sees fit and he isn't overrhuled.

If Rhule puts his grubby fingerprints on it and tells him who to use and how to use them, it's same ol' same ol'.

I just don't trust Rhule not to micromanage.

Fair point.  This guy has probably forgotten more about the offensive line than Rhule knows.

I sure the hell hopes he lets him do his job.

I would love to see Brown play.  I think Rhule has a hard-on for this kid and wouldn't have played him even if he was showing All-Pro potential.

To me, Campen is a no lose situation.  Seems pretty obvious that the players will be largely the same ones who ended last year.  We might get some help, but don't expect it to be a lot.

If he comes in and turns the line around, there is no one else to steal his thunder.  It will be VERY clear that he did it.  His reputation improves.

If he comes in and there is no change, you can't blame him.  The entire team is a mess, the line moreso than the rest.  One of the best OLine coaches in the league couldn't fix it.  That's an indictment of Rhule and the front office.

We can't lose with this guy.

Yeah, restructuring Elflein isn't a great start IMO.

If he can make a LT out of BC, a decent C out of Elflein, then we need 1-2 guards.  Can he develop Jordan?  I doubt he is more than a backup.  D. Brown?  There could be a RG there.

We don't need to risk it. We don't need to play the game trying to see if we can maybe turn these guys into legit starters. Develop them, but don't act in the off-season like we are counting on them. Just go get guys that know how to do their job.

I hope we address the line in Free Agency and give him some tools to work with.   Then he can develop the rest of the squad into quality depth.  As we all know most teams don't go a whole season with the same starting 5.

You are right--our OL always seems to have multiple question marks--in this case right now, we'd have 4--can Elf handle center?  BC at LT, Brown at G?  ???? at RG?

The infuriating thing about last season was the lost opportunity to evaluate these two.   In the second half of a season going nowhere, the team could have given BC and Brown all kinds of playing time.  If they did, we'd now know if they were NFL starters or not.

Instead all those snaps were wasted on subpar vets who the team KNEW they were not going to keep.

It was just another example of the lack of planning and long term thinking . . .
